Also if the team is poorly assembled with poor parts, no coach can be successful. The only way to address a poor roster is by going to a tight system, which returns us to your excellent point above.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
It’s just like the “Shame Spiral” from the Simpsons.

Have we offered our Condolences to the Woodcroft family yet?

Maybe Woodcroft is the Oiler whisperer that they have been looking for and he can get through to them, but I think the failure of the previous coaches show that the x's and o's don't matter for the Oilers.
I almost feel sorry for Woodcroft. This could be a career killer for him. I wonder if Gulutzan was the original guy they were going to promote, and he was like thanks but no. One more HC failure for him and he will never get another chance.
|
Even when they do buy in, as they did last year, they’re only good enough to get swept in the first round.

Everyone's back on the wagon at Oilers HF. Looks like the stanley cup parade is back on. Their new brilliant coach juggled the lines and the problem has been fixed. Nothing more to see. 100% Tippets' fault. Wasted the wonder duos potential. Oilstain left his hidey-hole and has also made an appearance at CP.
Let's set the clock to zero today and make a "0" days without embarrassing ourselves sign, and see how long until the next debacle. Any predictions?

After enough stinkers eventually you're gonna get a game where Mike Smith makes some saves and the crossbar is your friend.
Does that mean you've turned things around for good?
The vast majority of the time.... no. Especially if your roster is as inherently flawed as the Oilers.
Look at the Canucks under Boudreau. Improved, sure, but would you pick them to make any kind of run even now? Not a chance.
Sutter is a very, very rare kind of coach.
Is Woodcroft that? No. Can he work the same kind of magic with the Oilers as Sutter has here? Chances are about as close to 0% as you can get, without being 0%.
But Edmonton's gonna put the cart before the horse cause thats what they're astoundingly good at. Oilers faithful are more adept at boldly jumping the gun than their hockey team is at the game of hockey.

They all tried their butts off and no body parts of Smith’s fell off so the squeaked out one win. We all should know that determination and effort is always short-lived and fleeting for them though.

I was watching last night from finnish tv the AVS-Stars game, and commentators were Ville Nieminen and Ossi Väänänen. They were talking about coach change in Edmonton and there Väänänen said that it is problem when you have one player who has more authority than coach and who dosen´t want to defence. How hard it will decrease high danger changes ets.

Oiler fans on the other board are pointing to their 6-3-1 record in their last 10 games, and then Woodcroft coming in and the team responding with a win over the Islanders as proof that the problem is solved, that the Oilers are still one of the better teams in the NHL blah blah blah.
Lets look at it.
Oilers 3 Islanders 1 - the Oilers allowed a ton of shots, the Islanders had an edge in grade a scoring chances. Smith did a bailout. But the Oilers still when I watched that game didn't look good
Chicago 4 - Oilers 1 - A crushing. The Hawks won all their battles and outworked the Oilers
Vegas 4 Oilers zero - Stomping in every way
Oilers 5 Capital's 3 - Caps missing the best player on the planet.
Ottawa 3 Edmonton 2 in OT - The Oilers got harshly outworked and outplayed in the backhalf of the game
Ednonton 7 Habs 3 - A peewee team should be crushing the Habs
Edmonton 3 Nashville 2 ot - Hey it was a good win, when I watched the game a lot of the Oiler shots were from the outside, but a wins a win
Oilers 3 Van 2 OT - Edmonton got a lot of shots, but their defensive play was awful and Koskinan had a strong game.
Edmonton 5 Calgary 3 - Calgary was a lot better especially 5v5. But Koskinan looked like Patrick Roy, and a unbelievable missed interference all gave the Oilers a win.
They may be 6-3-1 in the last 10, but frankly they've faced a lot of weaker teams. They didn't look good in their wins, and I have my doubts that they are going to be able to power through the rest of the months schedule.
But year Oiler fans, problem solved. Don't change a thing.

I can picture Nieminen with a huge grin the whole time Väänänen is talking!

Oh of course he does…
When McWhiner asked to speak to Spector alone at the press conference the morning after Spector’s harsh article, he probably told him he’s been learning from Kevin Lowe and the other old Oilers as mentors for years. So he knows a thing or two about winning if there ever was a question!

Velvet soft schedule to start to year, could see a brief dead cat bounce here but will likely finish the rest of the games with a below 0.400 win percentage. Very poorly constructed team with zero cap space and even less depth.
