I see tons of justification from Oilers fans. Saw one on Twitter try and tell Kent Wilson that Keith is still better today than Gio. Oiler fans also pointing to last offseason’s overpaying of Smith and the fact for the one year it really did work out and because of that it will certainly work your with Keith now

Is there any clarity of the conditions on the draft pick that the oilers are giving up?

What a move by Chicago. Amazing deal for them. Lose that cap hit, gain a pick and get younger with a cap-friendly D coming back with NO salary retained. Damn solid move by them and all 'Hawk fans should be very pleased with what occured.
The Oilers...woof. I think Keith is still serviceable. But to lose a young asset, a draft pick AND to take on that cap hit for 2 more years for an older declining player...wow. I honestly don't think Keith will be an entire train wreck on the ice. But these days the cap hit and assets being moved in either direction play in a big part in the whole player's "package". And Oilers woofed that up very bad indeed.

What a fleecing. “Hey Holland, if you guys make the cup finals I’m gonna look really bad here (for some reason…), can we bump that pick up”.
####ing hilarious.

Looking at Soderlund he seems to have bounced around leagues a lot. Pretty much just a contract

What will the Flames do if Seattle does like Vegas and gives the Flames a pass on the expansion draft and does not choose Gio, but instead signs Spokane's Derek Ryan to a 1M deal?
Gio at 6.75 with his never winning a playoff series in his whole career leadership will be fortunate to have as good a season as Keith. Would that set the Flames back yet another year as it seem Keith is expected to do with the Oilers?
All of the sudden the Flames are short on cap space. Would that knock them out of the Eichel sweeps?
Would the Flames buy Gio out? Would they do a salary dump trade to make room for Eichel or UFA RW?
Cost of the salary dump? a 3rd and Kylington?

Funny how American media are calling out the baffling idiocy of this deal for Edmonton, while Canadian pundits bite their tongues and grasp at positives. Sid Seixeiro is the only high-profile Canadian who has roasted the deal, and he’s pretty much out of the sports industry.

Meanwhile, Jack Michaels on The Fan just now said Keith chose the Oilers because they have a chance to win the Cup. Uh...hello, the Oilers were the only team in the contest to "land" him.

exactly. He wanted to be closer to his son who lives in BC, so it was pretty much Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton ... and neither the Canucks nor the Flames would do it. Which makes it all the funnier, Holland pretty much bid against himself.

So cap hits aside, you believe Keith is a better player than Gio right now and that Gio is worth absolutely nothing in a trade?

That is correct. Their own picks are no longer available to trade.

Great article (unless you are an Oilers fan), including these gems:
Quote:
This is less about what Holland gave up and instead what he has acquired in Duncan Keith; a soon-to-be 38-year old with a $5.5M cap hit through 2023. It would be one thing if Keith was merely past his prime. That wouldn't preclude him from being a contributing member to the Oilers in the next two seasons, even if at an inflated salary.
But Keith's on-ice performance has been actively detrimental to Chicago for years. Per Evolving-Hockey, Keith has been worth minus-18.9 goals over the last five NHL regular seasons; only Roman Polak ranks worse among NHL defensemen during that span.
|
Quote:
Holland himself was hired with the dynasty he built in Detroit in mind. Never mind the fact those teams were largely built during a different era of hockey and pay no attention to the mess he left behind for Steve Yzerman to clean up. Holland hasn't brought his winning ways to Edmonton yet.

It is quite possible you need to also note
- Larsson
- Klefbom (although he wasn't there last season either)
That means the Oilers D is looking like:
Nurse - Bear
Keith - Boberg
Bouchard - Russell
(and I have no clue who would be their 7/8 slots for the inevitable injuries)
Good lord, that is horribad. Add in a 65 year old Smith (if they re-sign him) and Kostinem in net along with a forward group that is allergic to their own zone and... gah. Bubble team at best.

That presser with Holland is a must-watch. Shades of the Lowe/Howson/Mactavish press conference years ago. Holland doing his best Lowe impersonation at about 54m10s. Starts getting pissed at the reporter asking a legit question, then talks smack about another reporter's question later on. Holland's response right out of the Lowe playbook LOL.
The chat comments on the YouTube stream are hilarious to follow as he speaks.

They can still trade the picks with a condition. The condition would be that if CHI gets the 2022 2nd, then their trade partner would get a 2nd in 2023 for example.
I believe something like that was done when the Flames acquired Gustafsson. I think CHI was supposed to get the earlier of the 3rds either CGY’s or EDM’s. Since EDM decided to give up the 3rd this year, CHI got CGY’s 3rd in 2020.
