Backlund never played KHL. If you meant GIo, he only played 1 year in the KHL.

I believe that text was supposed to be green. Who was the poster that kept yawping about how Backlund would soon wind up playing in the KHL?

I always like to think that my ragging him off every time Backlund had a good game chased him away from here, but alas, probably not the case.

To be fair to Engelland, he was a pretty solid player.
I think they picked him because, in addition to being a good player, he was also a Las Vegas native.

That's right; and they wouldn't wait to sign him after the expansion draft because they wanted him there right away to help the other players settle in.
I don't know if there was anybody else in the NHL, protected or not, who could have done the exact job Engelland did for Vegas at that time.

The UFA period was about a week after the expansion draft results were announced.
Hard to believe that the players Vegas selected needed to move to Vegas and settle in within a week of being selected.

So they needed to draft him one week before they could sign him as an UFA? No. There were no legit NHL players with reasonable contracts exposed by the Flames. Selecting a pending UFA seams like a waste of a pick until you see what their options were and the fact that they couldn’t “pass”.

The fact that we had the ability to add (and protect) Curtis Lazar was maybe an indication this team wasn’t going to be very good... but yeah, that list was a huge pile of meh.

This was a fun exercise and I think that's a pretty good roster. Missing a couple top end performers on the forward lines, but solid lineup throughout. Some really good role players there that would make the Kraken tough to play against. Two veteran goaltenders to carry the load behind a mostly young blueline. That blueline has a couple tough characters back there to keep the opposition honest. This is not a roster that will beat you on star power, but a lineup that has some guys with scoring potential and will grind away at you as they use their depth to win wars of attrition. Add a couple of free agents up front and this could be a tough team.

Adam Lowry just signed with the Jets don't think he is going anywhere.

Sigh. According to the projected protection list on Capfriendly, Lowry will be exposed. Scott Laughton just signed an extension with Philly, and he's expected to be exposed as well. Like it or not, there are going to be players exposed by your team that you may not be happy about. This is where teams may make side deals to protect an extra player, but without insight into that potential you can only work off the protected lists available.

Who are you anticipating the Jets protect instead of Lowry?
You've got: Connor, Dubois, Ehlers, Scheifele and Wheeler as no brainers
So then you can protect two of Copp, Lowry, Appleton.
Wouldn't they protect Lowry as one of those? What am I missing?
Same with Florida, don't think they are exposing Sam given what they gave up to get him and how he did with them.

I didn't make the decision of who was protected, because I knew people would whine and complain about a player not being protected in favor of player X. There's a really nice feature on their draft sim that uses crowd sourcing to determine who gets protected and who does not. Their selections are based off the data collected by people putting protection lists together. Yes, there are some selections I don't agree with, but I just went off who the tool identified as being available. Just like with the Flames, Backlund and Tanev were exposed, which I didn't agree with, but I still made the selection off what I felt was the best selection for the Kraken.

Some people are delusional, no matter how much the flames say Kylington sucks.

Yup. Thought about Backlund but felt I would go with the low cost player and save the salary for use in free agency. Remember, you're picking 30 players for a 23 man roster. Some of those picks are going to be guys that are tweeners, which is where Kylington fell. He's a guy that can play, but also slip through waivers easily enough to have some farm team depth.

Its not whining and complaining, its having an idea of who would be protected and who won't be. Just because I follow the Jets I know there is no chance in hell they expose Lowry and it will be one of Copp/Appleton/Harkins/Stanley.
Good way to draw up some interest before the draft though.
