Personally though, I'm still unsure if I'd want to see this deal go through. I'd rather add more and get them to include Skinner. Otherwise we aren't upgrading our top 6 forward group enough to offset the downgrade at D.
What about this deal?

To Flames: Hanifin, Lindholm, Skinner
To Hurricanes: Hamilton, Ferland

Skinner and Ferland both UFA’s at the end of the year. This would chew into Calgary’s cap space badly though.

I'd be OK with it as long as we could get Skinner extended. Feels slanted in Calgary's favor IMO, and I'm a Flames fan so that's a good thing.

This current team has a 3 year window before Hamilton needs likely at least $8M per which is followed by trying to keep Gaudreau who will command at least $10M. I don’t think they are ready so swapping out a 25 year old for a 21 and 23 year old makes some sense to me.

I have felt since the season ended Hamilton was the guy on the outs. I prefer they find a comparable forward and make a blockbuster trade personally than the Canes deal.
I agree that if the flames trade Hamilton it should be for a comparable (elite) forward and not for pieces we hope will develop.

I disagree that hanifin has the same or similar potential as Hamilton, the numbers don't back that up.

Well Flames fans didn’t invent this rumour, Lebrun is the source.

But yeah agreed on not trading Bennett. I’m pretty skeptical they’d trade Hamilton either. Moving one of Brodie, Stone, Kylington or Fox seems to make the most sense I’d say.

IIRC, Lebrun has since said that the talks happened weeks ago and went nowhere. Which means there is no source at all anymore, and we're arguing over a deal that is not on anyone's table.

Slightly? That is one of the most one sided trades I've ever seen.

Is that a fair deal?
No I think we get bent over in that deal. Faulk is way less valuable than Hanifin IMO. Hanifin has Hamilton potential. Faulk is meh.

Good. Then let's do it.

Funny thing about trades and trade proposals. Hard to get anyone to agree.

Just the suggestion of Hamilton for Hanifin and Lindholm has people freaking out on both sides.

If we are talking real numbers, the flames would take a downgrade on the Hamilton-Hanifin trade, a lateral move on the ferland-lindholm deal and Skinner would be the filler that you would hope makes up the difference.

Trading away superior talent for the expectation of untapped potential or expected player growth is a big gamble. The flames have an established track record of losing that gamble. I'm not going to be cheering for them to roll the dice again.

You would hesitate to trade Ferland for Lindholm?

I don't think Jarmo Kekalainen or Brad Treliving would.

Which = a pretty fair swap if both are unhappy

But this is exactly how trades happen. Tre has said numerous times, that his trades started weeks or months back and finally come through at the bigger times like the draft or traee deadline.

I am predicting that Treliving makes a couple of lesser deals in trading players for draft picks. 3rd and 4th line guys. Why?

1) Treliving wants to accumulate more picks as he himself has stated. Sounds like it won't be into the 1st round (and I don't think he wants to move anyone of note for draft picks - that is moving backwards).

2) It SOUNDS like Treliving has identified at least one or two forwards in the free agency market that he would like, and it sounds like they are not going to be top-line guys, but more of guys that can provide depth scoring. You have to make room for them.

So who is on the trading block this weekend?

I am guessing:
Lazar
Shore
Brouwer (yeah, right)
Hathaway

and perhaps Frolik

I think one or two of these will be moved. Foo is NHL ready. I think Mangiapane will get a long look as well. Stajan is gone so that is one spot.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Bennett - Jankowski - X
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Lazar - Shore - Brouwer

I expect Peters to blow up these line combos somewhat, and I just jotted them down for illustrative purposes.

I see one spot open as is on the roster, and Foo can fill that internally. If the Flames have their sights on a UFA (and obviously think that they can sign him), then they need to make space. There is no point in hanging onto any of the above and risking them through waivers at the start of the season. I guess it comes down to how confident Treliving is in being able to nab the one or two players that he is targeting.

I think hes looking for a big splash at forward and wont get away from it. I would be amazed if he doesn't come out of the draft or around July 1 with a top 6 scorer.

Not straight up of course but expecting lindholm to add a bunch of offense more than ferland next year might be a stretch.

If that was on the table you take it and run.
