Best 2 periods defensively this season, IMO.
Hard work, smart decisions and strong awareness.
Smith awesome again.

Man, even when the flames are playing good there's no way they win with game changing saves and goaltending.
I'm giving up on the dream of having a strong defensive team.

Pretty solid road period. More of that in the 3rd, please.

That’s one of the best road periods I’ve ever seen the Flames play.

That save with 1:01 left in the 2nd...how many times did we see that go in last season?
Mike Smith knows when to make a save. I feel like we’ve got a “big game, big moment” goalie here. That’s potentially huge come playoff time.

Flames much better defensively in that period, and we've got the lead after 2 on the road. Good stuff! We'll need an even better period to finish this off, as the Caps will no doubt throw everything they have at us in the 3rd.

I thought so too, save for the first 5 minutes of the game.
The Caps just aren't getting any open ice to set up plays. Sticks are on players immediately, and they're regularly getting angled to the boards or into another player. So nice to see that this team can be extremely effective defensively when they are on their game.

I know it's partially due to the team playing great, but I'm also enjoying the positive game thread

This is a small point, but do men not unbutton their jackets when they sit down? Watching Marek and York, I can't help but stare at the strain on that jacket button.

Last year the way you shut down johnny was by slashing the #### out of him, now that you can't there's almost no answer.
|
Doesn't seem to be just him reaping the benefits either. Lots of guys seem to be having great years. Cracking down on the slashing was the best thing the league has done for the game in a long time.

Sean Monahan plays with Sandpaper!! Hahaha like 1000 grit maybe, just need to get that to Ike 80-100 and he'd be even scarier.

Brodie and Hamonic looked better as the game progressed.

I think the difficult part for them is they're so similar it's trying to learn to play together still where there's hesitation in their game at this point.

I think defensive play will improve. GG says it's not close to what it was late last year. And like last year the same kind of progression is required ie they know they have another level.
Hamonic is going through similar transition as Dougie had. When his pairing solidifies the team will benefit.
Last year they were very aggressive at their blue line, stepping up and killing plays right there. This year the gaps are big and they're giving up the zone more. That will improve.

If only he played like Stephane Yelle, then we'd have a TRUE #1 center.

Didn't mean to thank this. There are two teams on the ice, the reigning president's trophy winner and offensively studded team is going to get good chances.
I thought outside early in the first these are a couple of the best periods we've played all year. Team is skating! There's a big difference between the 'fancy' flames and the 'get it done' flames. I would enjoy watching 82 games of this version of the flames.

Maybe it's a on-camera thing? Looks sloppy if you unbutton it? I think most commentators keep it buttoned up but most men would unbutton. Think it's one of the reasons why the bar-stool setup looks more natural.
