So if the Flames overpaid Gaudreau in this contract Johnny would have taken a big discount on his next contract?
Grade A logic you're displaying.

Locking up Monahan and Gaudreau longterm for a combined 13.125 is nothing short of spectacular.
Hats off to Treliving for not budging we are so lucky to have a patient GM.

I'd assume AAV on a 7 or 8 year deal. Basically, Johnny didn't want to sign for 7 or 8 years unless it was a ridiculous overpayment. Something like 8x8 (so basically $12M/yr for those final two years). Can't blame him either. UFA at 29 is exponentially more valuable that UFA at 31.

Makes sense, after this contract he can still get traded to philly so he can play the rest of his career there.

6 years at this average makes sense to me, years 7 and 8 on a 8 year deal would have probably driven the average up to much and when the deal is done it is far easier to gauge whether he deserves the raise to 7 or 8 million.

That $3.5 million signing bonus during the potential lockout year is a big selling point for Gaudreau too I imagine. It's a nice chunk of money if he is locked out and then goes to Switzerland for fun.

Lol. Thanks Dave in spruce grove.
I'm just glad we didn't go full oiler and sign him to stupid term at stupid money only to ruin his career and trade him for a bag of pucks.

That's what I was thinking, but it could have been something like Weird Al Yankovic's contract rider that stated he must get a new Hawaiian shirt for each concert in every city... In all seriousness, it would be nice to see those little details.

for one year of Gaudreau? Probably just a normal return.
I'd prefer we become a dynasty and Gaudreau wants to stay as he cements himself as the greatest player on the greatest team of all time.... but that's just me!

Obviously, more term would have been nice, but as so many have said, 6 years is a long time. And keeping the AAV under control is awesome. There are a couple other reasons I like this deal though:
1) Johnny's age - if he were 21 this year, 6 years would be less enticing because the contract would end after 26. But he's 23 so we're getting him until 28 (at least). In other words, this contract covers all the best years. But still gives him time to cash in big on a UFA deal.
2) It sets the bar for Bennett and Tkachuk. If Bennett has a monster year and says "I want $7M" Treliving just looks at him and says: "Two words son... Johnny Hockey"
The precedent is now set for the team, which will definitely help the cap management going forward.
All in all, a very good deal. And most importantly, it's done in time for the season and now everyone can focus on hockey!

I think the reason the 8yr deal broke down is that JGs 29 and 30 year old years are his two most valuable UFA years on his 6x60 deal he signs next. It's 12,12,10,10,8,8 or something. If he loses those first two years of it and at 31 is looking for a 5 yr 40 million dollar deal. So for it to be worth it for him to give up years 7/8 he would need the 12 million per from the flames. From the flames point of view if he wants 12 mil for those two years he can wait until then to see if he's still worth it.
The risk/reward of years 7 and 8 didn't line up for both JG and the flames so they came to a pretty reasonable deal.

So glad this got under 7 mil AAV. I had pictured this would end up with Johnny missing out on a few games and we end up caving at 7.5 mil AAV. Treliving is such a wizard in having him sign for so much less.
But I really don't understand the logic of wanting him to sign for longer than 6 years. Isn't it in the player's best interest to sign longer terms so they'd have a better income security?
So much uncertainty, while he may light it up and be better than Kane, you'd have to look at some of the other things that could happen, like Johnny getting hurt long term or his production may drop off during that time
It's also been proven that players play harder and better in their last year in their last year in their contract. Why wouldn't you want make contract signings more frequent?
