CBJ continues to listen to interest in #3 pick, however, sources say CBJ would like to attach a contract, (Hartnell) for cap space...
...CBJ still has to extend Seth Jones which will be costly. Also approaching offer sheet time and Jones could be prime target.

I don't think Columbus is going to want guys like Ferland or Backlund. They just won the Calder Cup and have several young players they will want to bring up. I think they want to dump contracts.

I think they're either going to want a #1 center or to dump contracts. I can't see them landing a #1 and dumping a contract or two in the same deal. I think they'll want to give up more than just Hartnell though if there's a deal with the Flames.

Columbus needs to win now.
Make the playoffs.
Backlund isn't going anywhere (yet) nor the core young guys. I don't Wideman works here.
Ferland might be of interest. No one wants Bouma. Colborne might be, but not with contract uncertainty. Nobody loves Raymond.
It might have to be 6th plus Colborne/Ferland plus second(s) or nothing at all. I don't see what else works.
Edit to add, from story in E=NG thread
Quote:
The Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen has received two “really good offers, aggressive offers, fair offers” for the third overall pick this week, however neither have been enough to warrant a trade.
Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports the price for the pick is likely a high-powered centre to help replace Ryan Johansen. However, Portzline adds that the salary of such a player would likely force the cash-strapped Blue Jackets to shed salary of their own.
Scott Hartnell leads the list of players the Blue Jackets could look to move to free cap space space, while Jared Boll and Fedor Tyutin could receive buyouts

No deal with Flames if that is the ask.

As much as I like Puljujärvi I don't think he's that much better than say Nylander that it warrants the Flames giving up significant assets and taking on a boat anchor contract. I hope the Jackets continue to drive a hard bargain as I don't want the Flames being in on this.

4-5 five players for a draft pick and a salary dump? Are we drafting Eric Lindros or something? At that price you say #### it and take Nylander or Brown and move on. There is no guarantee Poolboy turns into a top end talent. His numbers were not that good this year. For five players, you better be damned sure that he's going to be a superstar in the league. I would be very hesitant to do that.

I would be okay with trading 6OA, 35OA, and a prospect (NOT Gillies, Anderssen, Kylington, or Jankowski) to land the 3rd pick and Hartnell.

That's the kind of trade i was hoping for (though i would throw in Jankowski if need be). After reading they want a top line center, I highly doubt the flames are in on it anymore.

There are some proposals in this thread that are so bad, the posters at HFBoards would be too embarrassed to suggest them.

They're not gonna get a top line center for the 3rd.
It they trade it, they're going to trade down. So, 5th/6th/7th...+ a package of picks and prospects.

Yeah I'm starting to think this is more a case of 'let's see what we can get' tactics by CBJ as opposed to them preferring someone else. Even what they've released to the media smacks of trying to start a bidding war and jack the price up (which is fair enough).
Fortunately, I think our GM has proven he's savvy enough to not buy into it and will only offer market value, provided that's right for the team. Pretty confident after last year that we'll use our seconds productively and get a few great prospects if they're used at the draft.

Bennett was part of the big 4 two years ago. Puljujarvi (starting to nail the spelling now so time to acquire him!) is part of the big 3 this year.
They're both top grouping top 5 picks in an NHL draft separated by two years.
I realize comparing draft years can be tough, but why are we so many thinking that Bennett isn't the better asset than Puljujarvi? I'd call them comparable in their draft classes, and Bennett plays center.
Trading Bennett for the 3rd pick is lunacy.

The top centre they get in that trade is Logan Brown. I can't see a team trading a top centre for the pick and taking a contract unless they are trading from way back. Strome+19 from the Islanders for Hartnell and 3rd?

Exactly - no team is giving a top 10 pick and a top 6 center.
Maybe the only team would be Arizona if they give up 7th overall and Hanzal but even then that isn't really a top line center.

After hearing the Jackets requirements to get to 3OA I hope we just avoid it altogether. Maybe Tre could explore bolstering the RW position through hockey trade and attaching a 2nd or something to sweeten the pot and enhance the return. Any thoughts to what Colborne and one of our 2nds would return?

Flames end up with something from Leafs, Hartnell, maybe another CLB minor prospect and 3OA. Give up the captain (and Backlund) but the Leafs would be looking for a Gio leader and captain. CLB gets a player with same cap hit as they are dropping in Hartnell, but 7 years younger in JVR (and Backlund).
Flames get out very early in Gio's contract...well worth it now, maybe not so in years 3+ but Leafs won't worry about that if they've got a hometown bonifide captain in the ranks to help a young team. Plus Hartnell which brings some grit...as far as the potential other CLB and Leaf player, who knows.
Or, it could be simpler, without some of the peices mentioned.
Flame away, don't do these very often...it would be a surprise, but not a total shock, if we see Gio move IMO...and the Leafs would likely be (the) one team he'd waive for.

That is one of the worst trade proposals I've ever seen. Gio, Backlund and the 6th for 3rd overall? WTF?! In what world does that make any sense for us? Regardless of whether the value is right, and I think it's a big overpay, it just makes zero sense. We'd be picking top 3 next year guaranteed.
Forgot to add that we take on a bad contract for a post-apex player that we have to protect in the expansion draft. What a doozy.
