Wow, enough with the 2017 talk. There are multiple sources saying it's a 2015.

Give it a rest.

Comparing Connolly based on career points is dumb.

Connolly was playing in the NHL.

Sven was playing in the AHL.

Its no shock one got a higher return then the other.

It's a deep draft, in confident about the guys in the 2nd round.

Those type of trades won't happen until they're on the draft floor though and teams see who's falling where.

Yes, but having extra centres mean some may be converted into wingers (ie: Colborne and Jooris at times this year).

Better too look at the number of "top 6" or even "top 9" forwards on this team going forward.

3 2nds is pretty decent currency in this draft.

Could use one to move up in the first, or try and use all of them to add a 2nd first rounder.

Was sad to see him go since I did like him, but since he asked for a trade and wasn't going to sign here....good riddance.

Default Flames trade Baertschi to Canucks for a 2015 2nd round pick

I understand all the reasons he had to be trade now but I think the concern is real that he is going to thrive and turn into a legit top six forward. Just think of how great his progression looked right up until Burke came and made those comments seemingly out of the blue. Sven had finished the lockout-shortened season playing a bigger role with the flames and was looking every bit like a top six forward. Ever since Burke made those comments in the 2013 off season, he has struggled with the organization.

Because of that, I could easily see a spark igniting in baertschi's game and him going back to being a confident, creative, skilled winger... Who will no doubt get put on a line with the sedins next time the flames play them.

There are 30 or so Defensemen ranked in the top 90. Having 6 picks in that space, the Flames could significantly address the defense issues. Using 3 or 4 of them on defensemen, would be huge.

I guess if he demanded a trade, and when he was demoted the first time and he went down with a sour attitude you have to get him out of your locker room, the flames did that today.

with Baert reaching the end of his rookie deal and losing his waiver wire protection, its not like the Canucks have a lot of time to evaluate him. He's a prime candidate to go play in Europe next year. He has too many holes in his game, and it sounds like in his head too.

Not surprised he wanted out

After my initial reaction, I'm pretty happy with the deal now. Glad the pick is this year. The fact he is waiver eligible next year makes this necessary. He is behind too many players now, and we'd lose him to waivers for nothing. If we were to wait until October to trade him the best we'd get is what we have up for Colborne in a similar situation

I think Baertschi can turn into a player, but he's only ever going to be a 2nd line LW and nothing else, he's not suited for bottom 6

The whole don't trade in the division thing is just a fan fear.

In a potential for potential trade only one team wins. Either Sven will be a better player or our second will be. If you believe that Sven won't turn into a player then making the pick to a rival is actually better than trading outside the division. Not only do you make yourself better by trading for greater assets you also make your rival worse as they give up a better asset for a worse asset.

The downside risk is higher but the upside is also better to.
