Nash looks fantastic, as he typically does for Canada. A real catalyst out there offensively. So weird people didn't want him on the team.

At this point is it really worth making a compressed NHL schedule to accommodate meaningless/boring hockey? The first two games fit the former while today's and the game against the likely Swiss fit the latter. If Canada advances, then it can get interesting against the US, but not against Finland again.
I'm not a huge fan of trying to find forward lines to gel together in such a short tourney. A few big games at this stage isn't worth it IMO.
I'll still cheer for Canada, but I'd rather it be on a different stage. I miss my Flames. This stuff gets overhyped, but I can see the dramatics over the next while. I just don't know if it's worth all the hoorah. It's exciting when it comes right down to it, don't get me wrong. Good viewing stage to grow the sport too.
Bottom line I don't really like the NHL disruption. I miss NHL hockey.

I will take this hockey over nhl hockey any day of the week. Nothing is more exciting in my eyes then watching fellow Canadians shooting for gold.

Am just watching my PVR of the game now. How in the world was Nash's goal disallowed? The puck sitting on top of the net is at the very highest, equal in height to the crossbar, but almost certainly below, since the netting hangs down a bit. It's simply not possible for the puck to be above the crossbar. If Nash's stick contacted the puck, which I don't think it did, the part of the stick that contacted the puck is also not above the crossbar.

Lol. Like you were on the edge of your seat in those games TKB. I suppose that is still better than any Oiler game.

Actually I was, and you are correct it is better then any oilers game or flames game for that matter. That's my point, I would watch Olympic hockey over NHL hockey.....

Yeah, I think I meant the wrong poster it's a matter of opinion. Of course the home stretch is exciting and I enjoy that like everyone. Just jumped on an Oiler fan by instinct without looking. Haha. Still, go Canada go!!

Well you'd expect it to be, given its a best on best, all star game type that actually means something.
That said, the group games, minus the US vs Rus tilt have been hot garbage. Terrible hockey, but that should have been expected. The quarter finals on should be great, but I haven't seen anything yet, other than the for mentioned US - Rus match which was great, that is even close in quality to the average Flames game.

Sure the first two games aren't exactly meaningless, but there's always someone who likes to split hairs. Semantics if you will. I won't argue on that.

But if say, the Oilers were and should be?? pushing for a playoff spot, that could be entertaining too. How about battling it out with Phx/Dal/van/Wpg??
That stuff is fun too and although Edm failed hard, I'd rather the NHL machine keep right on going. Especially with the time change and even tho there's PVR, it's not the same. Team Canada is starting to look like the Juniors too. Chemistry issues. Thankfully, Doughty is carrying them, but that won't last.
Getz, Crosby better get it going. Boring hockey that crowds the middle of the ice.
Overhyped.

And before the Maple Leaf chest thumpers chime in too loudly, yes, I did watch 2010 and that was great. But I just can't justify shutting down the best league in the world for this.
Sure, the best games are coming up. The last one was one of them actually. Check the thread for how excited fans were. Finland clogged up the middle to the point where it was almost Calgary/Minn style of game. Sure Canada is awesome skill wise, but an NHL game can rival that and bring an exciting game, but not like at this stage. Here, is it still worth what could be a few thrillers?? Hmmm... I'm not sure. I do like to see Kesler cry more tho.
The passion though, is good. I feel similar passion for our Flames, win or lose. I'm almost to the point Hartley should be coaching this team. He's had success and can motivate. I just reaaly like what he has going.

And yeah, prob most of this belongs in the 2018 discussion, but it does concern also the play of our current team.
Friedman should have asked Crosby in their interview, as he prefaced it with calling him the best player in the world' (which he is) ' What will it take for you and your line to get going?'

they ruled that he touched the puck,
puck was on the net, and stick above crossbar
I don't think he touched it though

I don't think he did either, and regardless, the puck was rest in the netting below the crossbar.
Good goal. Garbage officiating clueless to the rules. Sure they could have blown it dead but they didn't and they covered their asses.

They just had a blow-up of it on the prime time replay.
He definitely touched the puck. And regardless of whether the mesh sagged or not (very little on top of the net), his stick (which is what matters) was above the bar by definition (unless you want to argue that the shaft of the stick was bent at the time)
No question from the blow-up that the right call was made. ZERO question.

Lets not get carried away. There wasn't a forward that looked fantastic today and Nash certainly wasn't Canada's best forward.
The Crosby line has to start getting it going as his line has been a complete non-factor. Not sure if he's one of those guys that doesn't adjust quickly to new line mates or not but his play had dropped off in the NHL prior to the Olympics so maybe he's just in a midseason funk.

So will Canada potentially have the second toughest match up in the quarter-finals outside of the Fins with Russia? You would think it would be the Czech's or the Slovak's, but the Swiss are just such a finely tuned team. The other two have a few star players, but both are having bad tournaments.
It honestly looks like the Swiss spend the entire season together, and you could argue Hiller is a better goalie than Price. I expect Canada to win, but it could be a squeaker.

Bob McKenzie looked into it, and tweeted out this explanation:
Quote:
If you care, play not dead for puck on net unless there for 3 secs. Player can knock off mesh, into net, for good goal if not a high stick.
Highstick in IIHF and NHL is "above" crossbar at point of contact between stick and puck. FWIW, puck on mesh in NHL is not "above" x-bar.
If you look at a goal frame, you will see the mesh is strung from the middle of the x-bar. A puck laying flat on the mesh is not above bar.
Anyway, neither here nor there but many were asking. NHL's position, and they had to rule on it once, is puck on net is not above x-bar.
