Huh, I didn't realize a camera was a deadly weapon.

My laptop comment was directed at the post I quoted.

Also, if it was for personal safety reasons, don't bring money into it at all.

from CTV:

Quote:
The news angered many residents who wondered why police had the right to enter residents' homes and take belongings. Sgt. Brian Topham responded the move was made for the sake of safety.
“We just want to make sure that all of those things are in a spot that we control, simply because of what they are,” he said Thursday. "People have a significant amount of money invested in firearms … so we put them in a place that we control and that they’re safe.”

That would be a problem, given that my receipts could've easily been damaged in the flood.

Bringing this conversation back to guns, perhaps it would be a good idea to have a gun registry, so that the RCMP could easily verify that the guns are being returned to their rightful owners.

Can anyone advise on the 25th Ave bridge? I was down there last night, and looked like they were making huge progress, but not sure what a reasonable timeline is for repairs. Would go a long way in opening flow of traffic in the area.

I have been looking, can't find anything, but is that a recent/up to date source on the amount of water left in High River. Is the town still under water? IIRC the water is not going down and they are having issues pumping.

I would really apprecaite an update if someone knows.

Does anyone know of a good honest contractor, my mom had to gut her entire basement and build from scratch from the flooding.

I just want to warn about due diligence when getting a contractor. My mom's place flooded in 2005 and she was so impatient that she grabbed the first "contractor" that she could. He couldn't even measure properly and kept demanding another $1,000 up front for material. The second "contractor" seemed to be securing clients without having the manpower to actually attend to all of them.

It wasn't until I managed to get a couple weeks off work to "supervise" did we finally find a guy who was professional.

There will be a lot of "contractors" available now and in demand so be careful.

Guns that were locked in gun lockers were left in the homes. Guns over mantles or otherwise not locked away were removed.

Oh god this, 1000x this.

Try to hire a contractor that has at least existed for more than 5 years. Weeding out the fly-by-nights are your best bet to eliminate the idiot scammer factor by at least 50%.

Yeah, Mike Holmes might as well just set up shop in Calgary for the next year or so. Plenty of great material will be had I'm sure.

25th Avenue, where a bridge was lost in Elbow River Flood, could be back tomorrow. Shouldice Bridge has one lane open.

Thanks GL. I think I also totally forgot to mention those of you on here who are volunteering your time and efforts to this! Seeing things first hand over the last couple days in Bowness - both how bad things are and how many volunteers are there was shocking in very different ways.

Cheers to all again!

That is going to create absolute mayhem with the residents on 25th avenue and in mission. Atleast right now work rigs can drive where ever and get in relatively easily. Now if people are going to use it as a thoroughfare to alleviate traffic, ugh.

Stephen Mandel doesn't understand sarcasm. He (and a significant portion of Edmonton) also has thin skin:

Exactly. do your homework prior to hiring a contractor. Check references. There is going to be a ton of shoddy contractors who would love to take your money.

The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society said this morning that the gun nuts in High River are basically killing people's pets.

Quote:
HIGH RIVER UPDATE. On behalf of the rescuers in High River.

Volunteers are currently trying to evacuate the animals out of High River. We are being contacted by dozens of worried pet owners who are frantic to get their animals back.

Sadly, today the rescue effort was brought to a halt due to the protest by evacuated residents that took place at the barricade.

We have heard that there is another protest scheduled for tomorrow, possibly at multiple barricades. Whenever an event happens in or around town, our RCMP escorts have to leave us to deal with the situation. As we cannot go anywhere without RCMP officers to accompany us, we must just sit and wait until they can return.

Every time someone causes a disturbance at the barricades, we are then unable to get people's pets out. We understand how upset & frustrated the residents of High River are and we also fully support your right to protest. However, unfortunately the protests are causing us to be unable to rescue the animals, not to mention hindering other work progressing in High River.

We would like to ask all of you to please be patient and let everyone do the work that needs to be done in town. High River is simply not safe in many areas and there is so much left to do. We have a lot of animals that still need to be evacuated and every hour counts. Please be patient and help us to get the animals out!

Hey folks I just want to throw this out there. I was out in Siksika last night and the people out there living in tents are in desperate need of bug spray, in particular kid friendly bug spray (I didn't know there was such a thing). Nearly every single person who came through while I was there was looking for bug spray. The air was literally thick with those evil, flying monsters.

One family came with a 9 or 10 month old baby who was living in a tent and being constantly swarmed by Mosquitos. They needed kid friendly bug spray so that their baby could try to get some unmolested sleep to recover from a horrible cold. The cough that baby had was awful. I could barely contain my emotions, especially when we couldn't find any spray for them.

So if you're out and about this weekend, consider picking up a can or two of spray (kid friendly would be best) and donating it to Siksika Nation. I can guarantee you they would be incredibly grateful.
