They do only need 7 to get to 23 after Broberg and Holloway are qualified. That puts them at 16.
OK, but not with Campbell gone. Right now they have 14 with him, so 13 after a buyout (and they will only have one goalie).
And a QO doesn't put Broberg and Holloway on the roster anyway. They can hold out for more if they want.
Even in a best case scenario, they are going to have to replace a bunch of spots with league minimums and $1M contracts. As much as we don't like Edmonton, Foegele, Janmark, and probably even Brown are going to want and deserve more than $1M per year. They're going to want more than a one year contract as well.
Thats the end of this chapter of this Oiler story. Good ending also.
I didn't notice last night with the excitement of FLA winning, but re-watching the final seconds of the game this morning I am noticing how not excited Cuthbert is when announcing the Panthers won the Cup. He is speaking loudly, at best. Compare that to how his call would be if the beloved oilers won the cup.
Ken Holland’s contract ends soon. So they will have to hire a new GM before they can really address their cap and roster problems. It will be interesting to see how they manage the team going forward

Rumour is he is out the door this season. Taking jobs elsewhere
Lol, the image in that first video is basically around the corner from my place...and right next to the hive of villainy that had been Greaser Fan Central at Trolley 5 the past 2 months.
I made sure to take a nice post-game stroll past there to soak up the sadness. So glorious

But (a) still costs them 1.1 and (b) means they have to go sign a goalie.
And the savings are reduced the next 4 years.
Campbell Buyout:
24-25: $1.1m cap hit
25-26: $2.3m cap hit (This is where Drai / Bouchard extensions would kick in)
26-27: $2.6m cap hit (This is where a McDavid Extension would kick in)
27-28: $1.5m cap hit
28-29: $1.5m cap hit
29-30: $1.5m cap hit

Right - the cap hit is higher so the cap savings are reduced. And as you note, they are the highest (at full backup goalie level) when their bog contracts come up.
Mind you, I think they lose James Neal's hit year after next.
I will say, as someone who's married to a high school teacher (and my job also revolves around education, just for more mature learners), that while I agree that McDavid not coming out to accept the Smythe is not a "generational thing", there most certainly are generational behavioural trends for Gen Z (which McDavid is) and Gen Alpha that are concerning that are becoming more and more frequent. Entitlement and the whole "I don't have to do this if I don't want to" attitude being one of them.
So yes, I wouldn't blame McDavid no-showing his own award on it being a generational thing and would point the blame at him, I wouldn't fully discount it playing a role either as behaviour like this does seem to be more common amongst people his age and younger compared to older generations.
As the apparent face of the league, though, no excuses for him.
I already saw an article this morning on McDiver's amazing leadership qualities in the face of a loss. Apparently he stayed on the ice until all of his teammates finished the handshake line. Wow, what a leader. Give me a break.
This article also claimed not coming out for the Conn Smythe was another form of leadership- showing he wanted to be with his team and not personal accolades. Never change media. Surprisingly, this was Sports Illustrated I think, not the Edmonton sun.
