It would be pretty great if the flames acquired eichel without sending any valuable roster players back… and just gave Buffalo prospects + conditional picks. Fans of other teams would be up in arms about the flames pulling a kucherov with eichel. They could play the whole season at the cap with eichel in reserve… just waiting for cap relief through injury to other players or waiting for the playoffs when there is no cap at all. Then they get to add a $10 million superstar.
It also puts way less pressure on management when it comes to tkachuk. If he puts them in a tough spot in contract negotiations next year they can trade him to recoup some of the picks/prospects they traded for eichel. It will have been the equivalent of trading tkachuk for eichel. Would love to keep both but if it can’t happen it’s an ideal replacement of talent.
This is the way.

For the poster who said Matthew would go where he had the chance to win over money, I am not sure what to expect
These comments from Matthew definitely lean towards the notion of being cutthroat in negotiations, being proud that it is what Tkachuks do.
Funny quote from Keith in this article, makes me think of Matthew’s acumen with pressers and hat flipping

The Jets had every intention of re-signing their future franchise player, but the financially-strapped club was forced to stretch its budget when Tkachuk signed a five-year, $17.2 million offer sheet with the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Jets decided to match the offer rather than receive some kind of compensation, most likely five first-round draft picks, in return.
With a new contract in hand, Tkachuk quickly became a target. He was stripped of his captaincy by then-coach Terry Simpson before the start of the season and was constantly criticized by Winnipeg hockey fans and media.
"The contract was probably the biggest issue of the year," said Tkachuk at the time. "You have to live up to so many expectations, making that much money. It was awfully tough because everywhere I went, I was the $6 million man, not Keith Tkachuk. That was hard for me."
Since the Jets had to pay him $6 million in the first year of that deal, the team was forced to trade fellow star forward Teemu Selanne one season later to make ends meets.
Over the next couple of seasons, the Jets moved down to Phoenix and NHL salaries skyrocketed. While stars such as Jaromir Jagr and Dominik Hasek were receiving huge contracts, Tkachuk grew increasingly dissatisfied with his deal and staged a holdout before the start of the 1998-99 season.
Negotiations were tense, with the Tkachuk camp demanding a contract that would pay the forward $40 million US over the next five years.
At one point, then-Phoenix general manager Bobby Smith cut off all contact with the camp.
"I think we have a good enough team to make the playoffs without him," said Smith at one point. "All we have been able to do with Keith Tkachuk is make the playoffs and lose in the first round."

2021/2022 Trade Speculation and Rumours
If the team is confident in Kylington being ready and Mackey being close… Valimaki may be a player that could be included in the trade for eichel:
Valimaki
Pelletier
Zary/Coronato
2022 1st round pick (top 10 protected)
2023 1st round pick (conditional*)
*condition on first round pick is if eichel plays at least 70 games and he puts up at least 70 points. If not, it becomes a 2nd round pick. Also, if the pick is a top five pick, the flames have the option to defer a year to 2024 and will have to add two 2nd round picks to the package.
That’s the equivalent of 5 first round picks if the conditions are met (i.e. eichel returns to full health and plays at an elite level). And it’s at least the equivalent of 4 first round picks if eichel doesn’t reach that level next year.

What if we traded him to a team that likely is in a 4 year run of contending. Based on this teams history would 4 1st rounders in the 20’s amount to much?
Look at the post lockout history of picking in the 20’s
05- Pelech - bust
06- Irving - bust
07- Backlund - solid
08- Nemisz - bust
09- Erixon - bust
13- Poirier - bust
13- Klimchuk - bust
19- Pelletier - TBD
20- Zary - TBD
1 solid pick, 2 guys too soon to tell, and 6 busts. I don’t think trading Tkachuk for magic beans makes any sense

As I said earlier in the thread (or in another thread), I was in Wpg at the time. Everyone knew that they couldn't keep Tkachuk, Selanne and Zhamnov. Unfortunately, they kept Tkachuk.
Everyone knew that the Jets were done in Wpg regardless, but this was the final nail in the coffin for the franchise - one final, disastrous ####up to put a nice layer of icing on the cake.
It was plain then with dad, and it is plain now with the boys... they only care about one thing: Tkachuk Inc

Taking a while to get to 5000

Given that Eichel will spend almost all year on the LTIR the Flames could actually get him without sending salary out now.

Jury is still out on Treliving’s picks. The other ones were just not good at all. I think we’ve done better scouting. Plus, those picks could be used to bolster the team in different positions, with already proven players.

I would rather seek a far different package than just picks for Tkachuk but maybe that thought will change if we are heading toward a tear down in the offseason.

I agree that we should pursue a better package, but I won’t be mad if it’s 4 first round picks. We also get cap space as compensation.

If they did, and he was able to return before the end of the season, they would be forced to shed $10M in salary at gunpoint.
It would be a disaster.

My personal belief is that Eichel won't play this season. Playoffs? Who knows.

But it is reckless to acquire him, just assuming/hoping for that. If he came back early, the team is beyond hooped.

Please Treliving just friggen push your chips all in with Eichel. You’re literally down to your last hand here so what’s the point of the last 8 years if you don’t take the chance and go all in. This season is the one where the flames undoubtedly come to the fork in the road based on how they perform ahead of the trade deadline and we either do well and take the turn towards 2-3 years of contending or we cave and take the turn towards a blow it up rebuild. There’s no in between here anymore, he’s had more than enough time to build out his roster.
Flames fans want it, I can surely tell you the Americans on the team would love it, the media hype would be over the moon for it, so just do it Treliving.

I am still very interested on a Tkachuk lead package for Eichel. I do not believe Tkachuk is here long term or the next negotiation will be extremely painful (personally I think he takes the $9M QO regardless of how the season goes).
Flames need to be able to protect their pick but something around Tkachuk, Protected 1st, Valimaki, prospect would work for me. If Tkachuk needs to be rerouted perhaps the Aabres can extract a bunch of futures if they take some cap dumps from that third team?
