The Oilers problem is not only their best player seems like an ass hat, their 2nd best player is the exact same.

Gotta say the sense of entitlement is baffling. And then there’s Woodcroft to top it off

Aside from a stacked WJC, McDavid has never had team success. Teams he was the captain of.
2012/13: Last in his OHL division (no playoffs)
2013/14: Out in OHL semi-finals (no Memorial Cup)
2014/15: Loses in OHL finals (no Memorial Cup)
Didn’t even win a championship in the GTHL. You have to go back to his peewee days to find a team he lead to a championship.
Can you provide an example where he’s been a great leader? Aside from tapping someone on the shoulder and saying “let’s go.” He’s a flopper & a whiner, not good attributes for a leader. Crosby is still far and away a better player. He had abandoned his whininess by about year 3 and has lead every team he’s ever played for to a championship.

Last year in the playoffs was the first year where McDavid played at a level where I thought I might choose him over Crosby in the playoffs (at Crosby's current age). I still wouldn't take his playoffs performance over a prime Crosby playoffs performance though. Not even close. On the Pens' cup runs, Crosby was everywhere on the ice, winning battles in all circumstances and doing whatever was needed for his team to win. That's not something McDavid has ever shown in the NHL.

The best thing the Pens did for Crosby was surround him with positive veteran role models like Recchi, LeClair, Gonchar, and of course, Lemieux. Recchi in particular was said to make sure that Crosby stayed grounded and showed him what it was like to be a professional. Despite Crosby instantly being the best player on the ice, Recchi continually made sure he was accountable in all aspects of the game and putting in the work every night.
Of course, Crosby deserves credit as well for being a good student and coachable player.

This is very important, "stay grounded". That's why Crosby stopped his whininess after 3 years, and that's why he recognized his shortcoming of poor on faceoff in his rookie years and worked on it during the off season. And in McDavid's case, he's surrounded by people telling him he is the greatest thing ever. And he doesn't need to play defense all he needs to do is score goals. And since he is the greatest thing ever, no one dare to touch him. This entitlement ingrained in him that he doesn't need to work hard therefore he will not be able to lead his team to win the ultimate prize. I'm not sure at this stage even if he is traded or sign with another team will change it. Will there be anyone, coach or team mate be able to get him to play the 200 foot game.

I seem to remember Mike Richards doing interviews of Sidney Crosby when he lived at Mario Lemieux’s place.

Also, and this is important, he makes everyone around him better.
There is an important distinction between that and 'he gets everyone around him more points.'

I’m told that tonight is a must win game for Oilers v Kraken so there is a real push for the apparently injured Draisatl to play.
Which would be so much the oiler way on a number of levels.

agreed. the guys up north don't strike me as students of the game (at least not since their rookie/sophomore years) nor of improving as professionals. they do what they know very well, but they're not expanding that in any meaningful way
goes well beyond hockey though. its important for any adult/professional to never get to that place where they believe they know it all, or that they know best. cause that's when you stop growing
there's confidence, and then there's arrogance. Crosby and iggy are good examples of the former, where they carried themselves on the ice like stars, but remained humble and receptive to vets and coaches.
part of it may very well be edmonton's fault for being terrible at developing players as well as enabling his one dimensional game but McDavid just strikes me as the latter type. aside from scoring goals more efficiently, the only thing he's added to his game is embellishing and picking bones with officials
this is why Crosby will always be the more accomplished player, at least in regards to winning
Pittsburgh handled his development exceptionally. Edmonton sharply contrasts that with how they've handled and built around McDavid.

Cant play a forward 25 minutes a night and expect them to play a 200 ft game. So the org continues to perpetuate the never ending cycle of no good by doing just that.

My Oilers fans buddy was telling me "McDavid has 72 points in 37 games; even a Flames fan has to appreciate that!"
It finally hit me: McDavid is Steve Yzerman, but he never had a Scotty Bowman to sit him down and tell him he needed to put the team ahead of his own stats if he ever wanted to win.

you would expect a good hockey player with 72 points to be a little more than a "+6"

Wow I didn’t realize Nuge was on pace for 100pts. With their top 4 scorers over a point per game and 3 guys pacing over 100 (McDavid at 160) and they are still a team that can end the year barely hanging on to the second wildcard spot

all world skill, but put personal point totals first. poor defensive commitment & couldn't get it done in POs.
