If, in the extremely unlikely scenario Barkov drops to 5th, there's a snowball's chance in hell he drops to 6th. Rutherford's phone would be ringing off the hook the moment Nashville took somebody not named Barkov.

Rutherford basically said they'll take a forward, they have all forwards at the top of their list besides Jones. Given all of them save Nichushkin are centres there's a good chance they end up with a centre. Tlusty is a winger isn't he? I'm hoping they like Nichushkin, I could definitely see them taking him.

Hell, even if Murphy turns out to be a good player, I'm much much happier with Sven.

That brings me to this year. Carolina is right before us again and I can't help but wonder if they will "help" us out again by giving us the better the player (not intentionally obviously). Do they take Nichushkin, Nurse leaving us with Barkov/Lindholm.

I can only hope history repeats itself.
I think Carolina is one of those teams that wants immediate help. They are in almost the same boat as Edmonton in that they both want capable NHL defensemen. I could see them trading the pick for an established player or picking someone who can step right in.

In an article, one of their scouts felt there were 6-7 guys who could step right into the NHL. That could perhaps include Nurse or Pulock, but I doubt it.

History tells us Rutherford likes NA forwards. I think they take Monohan if they keep the pick, but I would not be surprised the see the pick traded.

I thought it was Poile that said he was going to take a forward?

I also hope they like Nichushkin, but that pick would be in-congruent with their past tendencies.

I haven't heard anything from Poile. But I definitely watched a Hurricanes press conference with Rutherford where he talked about an elite 6 and having all forwards on top 5 list besides Jones.

Carolina is the real wildcard here. Nashville taking either Barkov or Lindholm wouldn't be a surprise which theoretically should leave us with the remaining guy. But Carolina .. it's weird, it would be annoying if they took another center just to move him to wing, but they totally might.

As time goes by, I'm getting more skittish about Monahan, which is why Carolina makes me nervous.

Oops, wrong thread.

But mark me down as preferring we stick to our 3 picks instead of trying to trade up (unless we got into the top 4 I suppose).

Starting to think that nobody ahead of us is going to snag Nurse or Nichushkin and that Lindholm and Barkov will be off the board.

Then the Flames choice will be between Nurse, Nichushkin and Monahan.

Same. Only I think Nichushkin and Nurse aren't real options. We're left with Monahan.

Fwiw, I talked to a somebody who's tied in with the 67's (and has been for a long time. He said that Monahan is the best junior he has seen come through those parts and the only one that was comparable was Couture - and Monahan is his opinion projects better down the road.

Who knows if that's actually what happens though. Hopefully Button, Weisbrod and co. are doing their homework. This is a critical draft for our franchise

At this point what is the best case scenario for the Penguins and Blues picks? I mean in terms of draft position, what is the best they can be?

The absolute best that the Penguins pick can be is 25th I believe (that requires that the hawks get bumped in the first round) and I believe that the best St. Louis could be is 20th (every team above them in league standings gets bumped in the first round).

Don't quote me on that though. Not 100% sure.

The positions are right, what it depends upon is the conference/cup finals.

Draft Order
30th = Stanley Cup Champion
29th = Cup finalist
27-28 = Conference Finalists (in order of standings position)
(21-24)-26 = Division Leaders (Pens are in this group)
15-(20-23) = Non-Division Leader Playoff teams (Blues are in this group)
1-14 = Non-playoff teams

If the Pens and Hawks are bounced before the third round then the Pens will pick 25th.

If all of the division leaders and the Bruins are out before the third round then the Blues will pick 19th.

Basically for the best case drafting for the Flames the conference finals has to involve 4 of the following teams:
WEST = LA, SJ, DET, MIN
EAST = TOR, NYR, OTT, NYI

6 - Lindholm/Monohan/Barkov
STL - Morrissey/Compher/Zykov/Lazar/Horvat/Hagg/Pulock

Fun draft fact:

In every draft since 2003 the Edmonton Oilers first rounder has been ahead of the Calgary Flames first rounder. And in every draft since then except 2006 the Oilers have made their first pick before the Flames.

But that list is based on just player projection or what? Because that's not how the picks are going to go down.

That is probably the best analysis I've read on prospects for the upcoming draft. Thanks

Aye, same here. I hope the details on Monahan and Lindholm are as good.
