You cannot squint hard enough to turn this into two firsts.
But it's the best Conroy could do with a rental player.

I dont know about that.
He's 4th on Vegas for TOI/gm. Also a big part of the PK. He was a big part of that blueline.
Pretty solid 2nd pairing guy with decent size will get you an ok return at the TDL whether that be this year or next.

Even though the return on this one is much less than a lot of people expected, and even worse, was with the one team that no one wanted us to deal with, I still have a ton of faith in Conroy because he and the rest of the management team have proven they can draft elite players at any spot in the draft. If we can get another Gridin-level player with at least one of these picks, I think this deal still has potential to be overall positive for us.

This return (which is quantity > quality) is a downstream impact of being “competitive” every year. As SuperMatt has discussed, team should have pivoted before 24/25, and they didn’t.
You take the picks and move forward, but these are low/lower quality picks based on the Vegas strength, low quality prospect, and a player for “right now”.
It’s a “quantity” return, not a “quality” return.
Whitecloud potentially hurts our ‘26 1st, and that may be the most painful thing to me.

That's not on Conny...that's on Rasmus. Once Conroy knew Raz wasn't going anywhere but UFA...he had little choice but to take the best "no extension" offer he could muster up.

We really think Whitecloud is being acquired to be flipped for picks? Two more years on his deal, he’s just a late round pick at best, no? I assume Vegas needed to shed his money and contract more than anything.

This is why o wanted him gone in the summer. I never thought the return was going to be much better than this. Couldn’t have been worse at the deadline or draft last year. If we end up with a top 4 pick it’s fine but we would be right there with the Canucks of Ras didn’t play a game with us this year.

He is another asset than can be flipped now or later. Bottom pairing RHD that plays hard are always wanted. I could see Florida for example being interested right now or in the summer.

Not sure why everyone is just writing Whitecloud off. He's played top 4 minutes in Vegas this year. He's not some fringe guy

If you want to defend the trade that is fine. I think it is the worst trade we have made in years, considering what we could have gotten at least years deadline.

I've studied Whitecloud a little better. You may be right. He's a steady shut down guy. I expect Calgary will keep him, at least for this year. And he has a bargain contract.

If we get Vegas's 2027 1st and 2027 2nd, and the 2nd in 2027 becomes a 1st in 2027 if Vegas wins the Cup in 25-26...where does the second 2027 1st materialize from?

Agree...and the annoying part for me, is it comes as a surprise every time for our management / ownership that this team has to be run in a different fashion because of different realities.

Oh...do tell what offers were ON THE TABLE and didn't get taken then....
Waiting, patiently...

I am trying to be a good sport about this trade. Happy we got a 1st. But that’s the only legitimate part of the deal. Why not make Vegas pay more by giving AP’s LTIR cap hit? Defer the 2026 1st to 2028 so you can pay up for another rental with another team? Give us Karlsson for us to flip? No Connelly or Ihz-Wozniak?
How generous of them to give us a defenseman they had to throw back at us for cap reasons, a prospect they selected in the last round of the 2022 draft, and a conditional 2nd that only becomes great if they win the cup. Oh, but that’s not all: If they win the cup, that means our 2026 1st is the very last pick of the draft. Gee, thanks so much Vegas.
Not much to like about this, at all. Again, happy about the 2027 1st, but the rest of this trade gives it a solid D+, borderline C-. I rate it worse than the Hanifin deal.

Believe it’s the 2028 2nd and it can become 2028 1st.
