I hope not. I really hope we can sign him and have his contract slide a year.

No, every indication is they want him to go back to Vancouver and be one of the leaders (and likely their captain) this season.

Huberdeau
Mangiapane
Dube
Coleman
Sharangovich
Pelletier
Coronato
Duehr

That is 8 NHL wingers. There is no way they would keep Honzek up, unless he was able to crack the top 9, and I just don't see that as possible.

If some of our Cs are traded, with no NHLers coming back, then maybe Dube slides into C, but that still doesn't create any room for Honzek.

They are going to give Pelletier and Coronato and Duehr a chance this year to see what they can do. Honzek is not jumping in front of them this year.

I hope they plan on sending him back down, but it wouldn't be the worst thing if he forces us to keep him up.

I feel like he’s no less ready than Monahan was, and his skill at this point is comparable.
But there’s just no real need to keep him up and have him play reduced minutes.

He’s better off being the #1 and Captain of Vancouver and getting another strong year under his belt.

Impossible to tell without training camp, but sure, I could see a scenario where he’s good enough to stick but gets sent down anyway (before or after a few games of experience).

Agreed, even though there's a part of me that would love to see Honzek have a strong camp and push for a spot on the Flames, it's nice to have strong prospects coming through every year or two - it also helps the Flames with their contracts if they aren't having to burn ELC years as well.

Hopefully after a strong season in Vancouver and a focus on putting in the work in the gym to get his body ready for Pro, and he could be looking at a nice bonus at the end of the season by getting called up to the Wranglers for playoffs. Then we can see where he's at by next year's camp and he'll either stay with the big club or start with the Wranglers IMO.

The idea is for the prospects to force the organization's player personnel staff to make difficult decisions.

That 2013-14 team had no where near the depth of the current roster. Joe Colborne and David Jones were in the top 9

At this point they I'm sure they'd rather get Zary going before Honzek, since he basically made the team last year.

Being close to the last training camp cut is also great motivation for the kids going back to juniors.

I thought this was a good listen (although ads take up the first 3 minutes of the video) and felt this would be the best place to put it. Really encouraging discussion points about our first 3 picks in the 2023 draft.

Start at 3:00

I forgot to mention it at the time, but my favourite quip to come out of Draft Day happened in one of Honzek's first interviews. When asked to describe himself, he said something like, "I'm really big, and I skate really fast."

Sounds good to me.

Yes, and he's going to win the Calder and the Conn Smythe.

and as captain, in a nice touch, he'll pass the Cup off first to Backlund

I don't think so, but not because of any quality disparity between Honzek and Monahan. The biggest difference is the roster: the Flames are a MUCH better and deeper lineup than the one Monahan crack3d.
