Yeah and with micro-breweries you get to enjoy them on a picnic table in light industrial calgary, so that's pretty cool.

I’ve heard nothing but bad things about travelling to Egypt. It’s about as corrupt a place can get and more polluted than you think. Have fun being interrogated by every official to come across and having the view of the pyramids obscured by smog.

I’m not much of a heat-seaker but half hot is tasty.
How popular is Swiss Chalet in Calgary? We don't even have any in Vancouver, but when I lived in Toronto, it seemed to be quite popular for many families.

There’s a Brewster’s in the Foothills industrial area. I imagine the other locations have lovely views of sprawling parking lots.

But yeah getting there would be a pain.
This is me. I love being in other places, it's the "getting there" portion I despise.

Airports and the hoops we jump through to use them stress me out (especially with kids and the strugglers who don't know how to do security). Road trips are less stressful but I sitting in a car for hours and hours, eating up vacation time, sucks too.

Totally on the same page as you! I've been completely addicted to traveling ever since I started as a young lad. Traveling really proved to me that people everywhere are basically the same - they want to be happy and secure and are quick to help others. Traveling around the world and experiencing different cultures has really helped me realize that I shouldn't be believing what the media paints for us about these people on the other side of the world and that I need to go to these places and experience it for myself.

There’s a handful of locations, I think. There were more but I know of at least two that closed. They’re in the same group as Harvey’s and Ricky’s and you see less and less of those too. It’s not a big loss.

The lakeside one is pretty scenic. Like, it's lake adjacent but basically the same.

Yeah, the uncomfortable is part of what makes travel a magical experience. It truly does force a broadened perspective.

"The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see.”
― G.K. Chesterton

I think this quote is my biggest piece or advice for enjoying travel - don't go see the things you are "supposed" to see in a place. Go and DO and SEE what actually interests you. The best travel memories are always something serendipitous.

I love butter chicken so I gave their butter chicken an honest try.

It is freaking terrible.

They do a good french onion soup, and their burgers aren't terrible.

I try and couple my traveling with surf trips. I hate crowded water so I often find myself in obscure locations trying to avoid the crowds. When the water is flat - then i seek out what is around for me to see.

Rule #1. Never leave a beach with good surf

Agreed but it’s the only pub option in Swingervista so it gets the $$$. I do think if another viable pub popped up in the lake mall they could be in a bit of trouble.

Road trips are part of the fun for me. I like to drive. You also run into things that you don't expect, neat off the highway destinations. I love that stuff. I did a trip down to Oregon to go mtn biking and ended up touring a volcano site, an old decomissioned bridge that they were bungie jumping off, things like that.

Yes, long flights usually suck, but man, looking out the window and seeing the Amazon river at 30,000 ft, that's pretty special. I haven't seen nearly enough of this planet, looking forward to seeing a lot more.

I always make it a point when I travel to travel in the cities the way that locals travel. Take their buses, their trains, their tuk-tuks at least once! This is how you breathe the city and take everything in. Don't need to travel exclusively that way, but at least try it - you'll see way more than from the backseat of an Uber/taxi.

My hatred of the airport/plane process won't stop me from seeing the world. But I'm going to complain about it.

Yeah, flying over Greenland was super cool when flying from Paris to Calgary on a direct flight. Got some awesome pics of it. Can't imagine how I'd ever be going there directly, so that was probably my only shot at seeing it with my own eyes.

And agreed on the road trips, especially with buddies. Just the laughs you have along the way, random stops, funny unexpected landmarks that becomes an inside joke with your friends for years afterwards, etc. That's definitely a big part of the fun for me.

...but on a flight I'm definitely a "window person" for that reason, which I understand many don't agree with. We're all wired differently.

I flew in April to Vegas and back without a hitch, but good lord it all seems to have gone to hell the last 3 months.

I think flying Direct is the key. Anything that involves a transfer is painful.
