DSP re-signed with Washington (1 year at $1 million)

DSP wasn't qualified but he's going to sign a deal. Ryan looms to be a better option for what the team needs anyway.

I will admit that I haven't been following the whole league for a couple of seasons and haven't really watched the Canes at all. I had no idea who Derek Ryan was until people started talking about him as a potential UFA signing.

He seems like he could be a decent depth signing and as long as it isn't Ryan in lieu of someone potentially more effective, then I don't see the harm. I just worry about the contract and the opportunity cost a little.

Yeah. This is it for me too. This deal can't price you out of that one. If there is a legit opportunity out there (who can be had at the right term/price) then you do that instead of this.

I think what we will get is this guy.

It's almost a given you will pay more than what you'd like for a UFA.

I am hoping that if we sign this guy, we overpay on dollars vs. term. Could you keep it to a two year deal?

Good morning. Pending UFA centre Derek Ryan expected to visit with #Flames on Thursday. He is No. 17 on #TSN Top 75 board. Ryan is sitting on a few intriguing options, but Bill Peters gave him his #NHL shot.

Intriguing options? I assume he's talking about bigger markets out east or one of the California teams? If there's a bidding war I hope Treliving is smart enough to bow out when the money stops making sense. I know Peters likes the guy but he's still Derek Ryan who's going to be 32 in December at the end of the day.

There is speculation the Oilers are after him too.

They need a bottom 6 center and he played at the U of A for 4 years.

I suppose if it comes down to the Flames and Oilers we will find out just how much he likes playing for Peters as I'm not sure the Oilers can afford to overspend for a guy like this.

Peters gave him his dream to play in the NHL, was the top scorer in Spokane when he had him. I don’t think there is any concern that he doesn’t like playing for Peters.

Why are we excited about a 3rd-4th line average Center again?

I am not buying this there are a number of other teams interested in him bit either. Probably agent generated BS.

Sure hope this isn't a over payment for a 5'11 170LB run of mill career AHL bottom 6 player. That cracked the NHL when he was 28.

Just going to ignore all the available data that shows Ryan has value?

Yeah I can understand why you don’t want him then.

He really wasn't used as a 3rd/4th line centre in Carolina, so if we pay him for his results from last year, what happens to his production when he isn't playing with Jeff Skinner on a regular basis?

If we sign Ryan to be the number 3 centre it makes me wonder if Janko is going to be shopped for help on the wing?

Jankowski can probably be signed for $2M or less on a bridge deal. With the arrival of Lindholm as another centre option I could see something happening there. Something like Janko+Lazar for Nino/Ennis?

Gaudreau-Monahan-Tkachuk
Bennett-Lindholm-Nino
Mangipane-Backlund-Frolik
Reaves-Ryan-Brouwer

Buyout Ennis

?

Then we at least will have a bottom-6 centre that has Backlund-level shot suppression metrics.

And that really would be just fine.

I just don't want a situation like Stajan where yeah, the player is actually pretty good, but we've paid him so much that his benefit to the team is nullified. We should know exactly the kind of player we're going to get.
