I'm fine thanks. I was just checking on you since you were going on about Ryan Smyth for some reason.

I'm not sure if anyone posted this already. If someone has, I apologize to them.
Matt Cane's contract predicting algorithm has predicted Derek Ryan should come in at 2 years * $2,483,222. This seems like a reasonable contract. I'd like to see 2 years or less (31 years old). The dollars per year doesn't matter as much to me. I don't really think Ryan is so great the Flames need to latch onto him and get him no matter what. If he wants too much, just let go.

The more I look into Ryan, the more I want this signing to come through.
The last time a free agent was rumoured during the phase was Brouwer, and I distinctly remember going through this "oh cool, let's take a look at this player more in depth" part of the week...and with Brouwer the more I learned, the sadder I got. With Ryan, the more I learn the more excited I'm becoming.
I think Treliving is working on giving Peters a lot of tools, and the ability to roll 4 lines at 5v5 play relentlessly. This signing would really help that.

I suspect more likely that Ryan got a lot of ice time and played up the lineup because Coach Peters’s options were really limited.

You are acting dickish. Rise above it. Board expects more from you. Otherwise you get more insane stuff rather than less.

Insane stuff like suggesting the Flames scouting staff has taken a back seat to Bill Peters?

This would be a fantastic signing at 2 years x $2.5MM. If that’s the deal, I hope the Flames announce it as the first 2018 UFA signing.

I believe it will be in the 3.5 range if 2 years or 3 x 3.
I believe his spreadsheet does not appropriately take scarcity into consideration.

I think the majority of the board knows by now to expect nothing more than an abrasive appeal to authority out of Textcritic.

Isn’t homeboy a mod? I used to love reading his posts, and he still makes some interesting points from time to time, but the personal attacks seem to be getting more frequent and more intense. Sometimes it’s warranted, a lot of times it completely detracts from constructive conversation. I would personally expect more.
Has he been possessed by the ghost of MrMastadonFarm?

OK then, I withdraw my previous opposition to this potential signing, assuming the price is right.

Ryan was a staple on the 22nd best PP in the NHL.

And again, look at that collection of forwards in Carolina. Ryan was a staple on the powerplay because of such scintillating alternative options as Brock McGinn, Lee Stempniak, and Phillip Di Guisseppe. The more interesting question is how did that powerplay manage to finish as high as #22?

Also that article neglects the fact that Lindholm plays better at centre, has stated that he likes playing centre more, and that Peters has said he will try Lindholm at centre to start the season. Ergo it's not a well researched or thought out article
Ryan as a 4th line centre= ok
anything else = terrible

Advanced analytics have turned into ways of “proving” bad players/teams aren’t as bad as they appear or perform in the measures that matter. The adage will have to be changed from “there’s lies, damn lies, and statistics” to “there’s lies, damn lies, and advanced analytics.”
If Ryan is such a great player why the hell did it take him until age 30 to play in the NHL? I would be extremely hesitant to endorse a player like that, and especially say that he’s a better player to one who has been in the league for 763 games. Brouwer is not a fan favorite, and the game is definitely passing him by, but he at least has a track record behind him of being a contributing member to some successful teams. Ryan does not.
The real annoying thing about this Ryan discussion is people refusing to acknowledge that, like Gulutzan with Brouwer, Peters played favorites with Ryan and gave him opportunity ahead of others. Peters played a 4th liner ahead of better players on the team, because Peters liked Ryan. Hurricane fans will tell you it was not earned ice time, it was given ice time, just like Brouwer got with Gulutzan. For all the pissing and moaning that went on here about the Brouwerplay, or how much ice time Brouwer got, or even how undeserving Ferland was to play with Gaudreau and Monahan, there are some here asking for the signing of a player who got similar treatment from our new coach. I can’t believe anyone would support bringing in a player like Ryan, who was obviously the coach’s favorite.
Personally, I hate it when coaches come in and bring their players from other teams with them. Especially garbage role players. We saw how successful Gulutzan was with that, and what a distraction is was. We have better talent in our own system. Stop bringing in crap players from other failing teams and think that will make our team better.

Lol well if you think analytics are not valuable at all, there's no point in even trying to have a reasonable conversation with you.

You keep saying that but are really just making stuff up. Ryan ranked 7th on the team in TOI per game - or pretty much 3rd line minutes. Here are the players who were on the roster for 30+ games that played less per game on the Canes than Ryan did:
- Brock McGinn - LW (30 pts)
- Lee Stempniak - RW(9 pts)
- Marcus Kruger - C (6 pts)
- Joakim Nordstrom - LW (7 pts)
- Josh Jooris - RW (6 pts)
- Phil Di Giuseppe - LW (13 pts)
Please tell me which players that were on the 3rd and 4th line in Carolina were being held back because of Peters love for Derek Ryan. The only young player that even has an argument is Phil Di Giuseppe but he's a LW who was competing directly with Brock McGinn.
So the only guys that Ryan held back would be C/RWs ... namely Stempniak, Kruger, & Jooris.

Not to mention that Ryan had the 5th best eP/60 on the Hurricanes at 1.59, which would have also been good enough for 5th on the Flames.

I’d rather the flames go after a guy like devante smith pelley who wasn’t qualified by Washington. There is a Monahan connection there and he could easily have a breakout year on the bottom 6.
