Henderson will probably never work again...seems like they wanted him out before this even happened. Guy is no spring chicken and not deemed good enough for the playoffs in years for whatever reason. Maybe the OA should be looking at why he continued in the game 2 mins later instead of taking the rest of the night off.

Probably had no reason to considering the NHL's actions here were completely unreasonable and unprecedented.

Just terribly tacked on and about as genuine as a $3 bill.
Also, the universal "so this never happens again" statement, which makes it sound as if there was some sort of loophole that allowed Wideman to brazenly take advantage of.
I think the officials union needs to spend a bit more money on a decent PR Agency if they're going to continue to make public statements like this.

NHLOA response is unsurprising. Can't blame them either.

I don't have any basis for this hypothesis, but I really feel that the Flames made no effort to trade Wideman at the deadline to back him up in these proceedings. If that is true, good on the team.

Because of the CBA that allows the NHL to read their messages....
Personally I'd just not hand over my phone and claim I lost it.

I don't think anyone really expected that to ever happen to them

I'm finding nothing in the CBA that says the NHL is generally allowed access to players' telephone messages (voice or text). There is a specific mention that the NHL is allowed to use such data when investigating whether a cap circumvention has occurred, but that's clearly not the case here.

As for the impact on the Flames, Wideman is our second highest player.
If you asked Hartley to rank players in terms of importance to the team winning (not overall best player, value for cap, or long term importance to the team), Wideman would probably be near the top of the second tier after Ramo/#1 goalie, Gio, Brodie, Money and Gaudreau. He could be considered our 6th most important player, and at worst around 10th-12th if you put guys like Hamilton, 1B goalie, Backlund, Frolik, Bennett, Ferland ahead of him.
To be clear again, I'm talking about importance to this team winning games right now. I think the Flames should have a pretty big problem with this, and I hope they are at least making it clear behind closed doors (there isn't much benefit to doing it publicly, so it's probably good that Burke had a measured response).

I could be wrong, but I'd be very surprised if they literally took his phone and read his texts. They would likely just go to the phone company and get records from them. Even if he deleted the texts from his phone they would still be out there.
That said I think it's ridiculous they have the authority to do that and if they do I think it's even more ridiculous they released a text to the public.

I suppose that would technically be possible for the carrier to provide that data if everything was sent as an actual text message, but how likely is that today? Something like iMessage is encrypted end to end and sent as data through Apple servers. It's basically impossible for anyone other than the sender or the receiver to provide those messages. This is just one example, but would extend to pretty much every message sent using an "app" instead of standard texting.
This is just the the technical side of things. I'd be surprised personally if a provider would play ball with the NHL on providing that kind of data without some sort of warrant.
So I guess in the end, I'd guarantee they got his actual phone.

They could get his texts if they owned the phone, which would surprise me if they did. No phone company is going to give your records to anyone without a court order.

You actually might be onto something. moon is still a regular on HF and everybody including flame fans hate him. So it fits the narrative. A 'Flames fan' who loves to trash the Flames more than Oiler and Canuck fans.

They have the authority because it went to arbitration which is pretty much "court rules". All evidence must be presented to both sides and that's why the NHL had the right to see his texts.
