I don't know anyone directly involved but I know some former Flames and they all feel the same way

A bit long but interesting segment from NHL Network with Friedman discussing the Flames, Markstrom etc.
Flames stuff finishes around 7 minutes in

Comix Zone has a proper link in the Trade thread. On my phone and editing is a pain

Yeah, I think there will be a market for him but the return could be worse. Saros/Gibson/Boston goalie and UFAs could all be in play. If New Jersey thinks Markstrom is their guy now just make it happen.

The problem with the goalie market in the summer is that no one is injured, so every team has all their goalies. You look at who you have and you think: how much of an upgrade is the other guy? And if you take a goalie, you need to send one back. So the market price is the perceived difference in value between the two.
I don't think there is any chance whatsoever that he generates the same, or even similar return in the summer that we could get now. This is the time to trade him, and I fear that window is already closed.

Teams pushing to make it in, or in the thick of it feel the pressure.
The summer is a whole new game, guys get healthy, teams are high on prospects or what they have. Plan B in free agency is a lot cheaper than sending high draft picks and prospects for a goalie.
The time to strike is now.

Assuming he isn't a tire fire from March 8th to late April and doesn't get a serious injury.
Market could be worse, or better.
But it should have more teams involved (plus)
But it has one less playoff run (negative)
Biggest risk to me is it being a lower value return than what they see now which forces them to wait longer and risk that 11-20 finish with a strong goaltender.

The supply of available goalies will also be more plentiful.
ANd I don't really know if demand will be higher. The demand for goalies in the trade market is never all that great.

Seems like Marky is their choice over Saros, everything else being equal.
The issue is the money, they want Marky for Saros dollars. That's $3 million over two seasons left on Marky's contract. Flames want a lot for retaining on that.
But Saros is a good consolation prize. Costs less in terms of dollars and probably assets.
I am very worried that NJD get Saros after all this hubbub. It's a ####ty thing to put Marky through if it amounts to nothing, never mind the loss of incoming assets at this stage of our history.

Asking them to 'call out' a guest is ridiculous and it's never going to happen (you can ask them, but they aren't going to do it). And nor should they. Instead of asking them to do your dirty work for you, how about you just learn to take what these people say with a grain of salt? Easier for everyone, no?

I feel like holding on to Markstom is a mistake. You don't need a homerun package or take another GM to the cleaners, get something good now. The team could be really bad next year and he could have another one of his off years, it could get ugly. You won't get anything for him at that point.

Nope, but you don't approach Markstrom with a trade he won't waive for either.
Flames are perfectly happy Keeping Makry until he asks for a trade or a team that wants him makes it worth having the conversation with him about Waiving.
If the accounts are true, the Devils and Flames got to that point. Now we just wait 2 weeks or less to figure out if things will happen.

Friedman kind of pouring cold water on the Tampa speculation:

There’s been a lot of speculation about the Lightning — which, on paper, makes a lot of sense — but look at the trade the Flames made for Elias Lindholm. Can the Lightning put together a similar package, knowing there will be competition? It’s hard to see. Toronto made a pitch, and would want to know the possibility of signing him, but Hanifin appears headed for the US on a long-term basis. Teams want to know where he’s willing to sign.

The more that the Devils delays, the worse it seems to be getting.
As it is today they still have 2 games in hand on the Flyers but they now need to make up 7 points to get into that 3rd divisional spot. And it is worth noting that the Flyers are playing very average hockey (5-5-0).
Another interesting tidbit is the fact that the 'Canes are one of the teams rumoured to be shopping for a goalie. If the Devils "settle" for Saros/Gibson and the Canes get Markstrom, there will be a lot of comparisons between those division rivals.
There are a lot of ways for this to blow up in Fitz's face but I think the worst path is "do nothing".

Him saying Dallas may be interested in Hanifin is really exciting.
I don't think Tanev gets you a guy like Bourque but I think Hanifin definitely can.
Stars have alot of interesting pieces you could potentially pry away with Hanifin.
