I think BT is a bit too fiery to last long in that market.

Maybe, but 9 teams reached out to Carolina including the Flames, but only in Toronto (and Edmonton because the Oilers management's policy is to talk to the media openly) do the media push and dig out the truth and not keep it under wraps as many teams ask.
If the Hurricanes asked for some Flames and Conroy had to ask guys if they'd waive, I doubt we would hear about it, at least not the next day. Conroy learned his lesson last year with that and the Markstrom debacle.

I'm pretty sure this is already a thing for a lot of players:
https://capwages.com/players/mikael-backlund
Mikael Backlund for instance; NMC throughout the whole contract, but trade protection for only 15 teams starting the second half of next season.

Marner seems like the worst possible player on that team to create trade drama over too. He's their leading scorer, and there's already some smoke surrounding his future with the team.
It's moments like this I appreciate cheering for a team in Calgary. The media in Toronto, and also Vancouver, love to dig into their teams until the teams are totally torn apart. In Calgary, at least when players leave it's generally quiet and a lot of other options have been explored (as long as D. Sutter isn't involved anyways). Witnessing the repeated #### shows in Vancouver and Toronto is difficult to watch. These teams have consistently had all the talent in the world, but the media and media egged on fans can't leave their teams alone.

"We have an extension in place. Now, will you take RNH and a 2027 first for one of the best players in the league?"
I've seen some loads of trash in my day but any talk of the Oilers acquiring anyone of value is just laughable. That team is so far down the line now that if they don't win this season, I really don't see how it happens at all in the McDavid era without cap room and near zero picks.

Because the teams are good.
I don't remember hearing this narrative about Florida when they were terrible. Ditto Tampa.

Let's be real here. It isn't happening. They missed their chance last year, the only player performing close to the same level as last year is Pissy. They are an old, worn-out team that is completely gassed.
You are correct though, this is the end. Mavi is going to see the lack of prospects, picks, and cap space and he is just going to play out the year to free agency.

Winnipeg is at the top of the standings, and it’s on no star’s short list of preferred teams, and on most lists of teams they won’t play for. Toronto and Edmonton have been contenders for several years now, and they don’t appear on these lists of preferred destinations either.
Being in a low-tax, warm-weather, U.S. city doesn’t automatically make a team a preferred destination. Being a strong team helps too. But location is clearly a big factor. And it’s also a factor in franchises become contenders in the first place - Tkachuk’s short list consisted of his home town and the same cities Rantanen gave. Stone going to Vegas pushed them over the top.

Not quite the same thing, as I was thinking of a no-demotion, no-waivers clause without any trade restriction. But close.

Pagnotta said yesterday the 4 teams were Dallas, Florida, Toronto and Edmonton. Dallas had the best return of assets from the 4.

So earlier in this tread you responded to a Pagnotta message and it was valid but now it isn't. Makes sense!

If the Hurricanes are looking for the best package then Edmonton should’ve done the courteous thing and not waste their time lol.

With their cap situation, could the Oilers have even offered Rantanen an extension, or would he have been strictly a rental? Bearing in mind that signing a deal in Canada would have likely required a higher AAV.

Pagnotta is a bum along with that whole 4th period squad.
It's hilarious seeing Oiler fans posting junk.
No one who is reputable reported Rantanen wanted to go to Edmonton outside that plant Rishaub.

I mean in this case it seems like straight propaganda...there is no way the Oilers were in on this. They don't have the cap or the assets.

No idea if the Oilers were in on this or not, but that's what every keeps saying about Vegas too, and they find a way most of the time.

I can see Rantanen thinking he’s play in Edmonton. Players are often as guilty as the media of over-respecting McDavid and Draisaitl.
