I don't know.
Driasatl or McDavid would get it done, lol.

There shouldn’t be any more doubt that warm-weather, low-tax teams have a big leg up in a league where players have increasing control over where they play.

It would be hilarious if the reason why they couldn't get it done was because Edmonton didn't have a 2025 1st rounder, because they decided they wanted to trade that pick to the Flyers in 2024 so they could draft Sam O'Reilly lol. O'Reilly costing them Rantanen would be awesome lol

Certainly for some players, possibly most, definitely not all. For example having a young family can really change one’s calculus.

Oilers never got a whiff at Rantanen.

Also they're at least the 4th best team in the conference if not lower.

I don't think they get past Dallas, Colorado or Vegas. If Helkebuyck doesn't pumpkin then Winnipeg too.

I can't wait until the oilers are completely irrelevant again.

The only reason anyone ever wants to go there is McDavid and he's only got one season left, and even if he stays he's already 28.

Once he's gone or washed up, they'll be in for an even worse run at the bottom the pre-McDavid "oil change" era.

The sprial is coming like an approaching train rumbling through a tunnel. The No Good is inevitable.

We'll find out if McDavid has any sense by if he takes the chance to get out of there or if he sticks around to close out his career in a bleak situation unlike any he's ever experienced.

Cap skyrocketing at the perfect time for him. If the Leafs let go of Marner, they will be able to sign Mcdavid to whatever it takes.

It is an unfair advantage that the NHL needs to fix.

That means scrap NTCs- they’re bad for the NHL.

I'd like to see players get contracts that specify ‘no movement except by trade’. It would give them protection against being waived or demoted, but leave teams the flexibility to trade them within the NHL.

The fact that an NMC is the highest level of protection, above an NTC, seems backwards to me. No movement between leagues seems like it ought to be the baseline, and no movement within the league should be the higher tier.

Of course, like Mr. Coffee, I'd like to see the whole issue go away, but the NHLPA would shed blood to prevent that.

The NFL and NBA have NTC but it’s rarely used. NFL doesn’t even have guaranteed contracts. I don’t know why a NTC or NMC is used so much in the NHL.

Maybe with the cap going up and higher salaries it will go away.

Btw Rantanen has a NMC for all 8 years lol

The league needs to enact some type of parity here.

First- a tax normalization structure for one. Where being in a tax advantageous state/country offsets your salary cap.

All teams should be on the same playing field atleast tax wise.

They can do that if they want to. It's just a NMC with a 32 team trade list.

In theory, yes. In practice, I don't think anybody has such a clause.

What the players don’t seem to get is;

Trades / player movement means maybe not playing exactly where you want but more likely way money. Maybe they don’t care about that but I’m willing to bet if you polled NHL players you’ll have way more that do, than don’t.

Maybe if we get rid of Buffalo and Edmonton the NTC goes away.

Interesting to hear Brindamour talk about Rantanen basically telling them right away he only wanted to play for four teams, and then Guentzal from last year, the Canes late in making a contract pitch....certainly not heaping glowing praise to his team's management group.

And with it coming out that Marner was asked to waive his NTC, and BT coming out to the media over the weekend, saying he only wanted to deal with this once, trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube, the Leafs media, desperate for any story, is all over it, no way he sticks around long.
