Don't know why Conroy doesn't hang on to Mangiapane until the trade deadline if all he's getting is a second round pick in next year's draft anyway. Unless Mangiapane really wanted out of Calgary.
We will see on Monday but I think Conroy is going to try to sign a few short term contracts (1-3 year term) that he can move before the end of the 26/27 season. Moving Mang opens up even more space to do that while not having young players blocked from being given an opportunity. He had the space to do that before but he would then have too many bodies.
I agree, I think Conroy is going to get some free agents this summer for flipping into draft picks next trade deadline. And he may well succeed at this, because I have to wonder if a few of them out there are expecting 'show me' contracts with ample ice time to translate into bigger contracts from contenders afterwards. Guys like Duclair come to mind.
I think any team has to believe that they can make the playoffs. Rebuild or no, I don't want any player who is happy with less.
Every player should want to make the playoffs but having your GM talk like he expects you to go for it would give you more motivation and hope.
When I see Mike Greer talk about the Sharks I don't see it. He admits he doesn't see them as a playoff team and as a player who isn't a rookie that would be a bit of a downer even though your expectations shouldn't be too high playing for a team like that.
Seeing the Flames making these moves makes me more likely to go to games, not less.
Thats good because tickets are going to be everywhere and dirt cheap. The secondary market is going to crash.
I grew up in the Young Guns era and you couldn't give tickets away.
That being said, I dont really care as I don't go to many games anyways.
Conroy is tearing this thing down to the studs and personally I think its overdue. But thats going to come with some pain. Thats just the deal.
As for Mangiapane, I liked him fine, I didn't like his contract and I didn't like the fact that the second the ink was dry on it he seemed to fall off a cliff.
Wish him the best and we move along.

For those worried about filling seats.. I look forward to the mid and low income families finally being able to attend games without paying crazy high prices.
There are many folks who I know that haven't been to a game ever because they just can't afford the $100-$200 per person.

As a fan who doesnt attend many games, I am unconcerned with attendance. Its not my money.
That being said, thats a pretty good way of looking at it. I'm fine with that. A whole new generation of Flames fans.
Besides, if I had to live through the Young Guns Era, they should too! We as Flames fans need to Unite through Misery!
Now. Where can we get a budget camera crew and a trombone?

There may be some optimism for the future but the future will still be 2-3 years away at minimum, this roster is shaping up to be almost as bad as San Jose was last year. I don't know if the average fan will shell out hundreds of dollars to watch a lottery team.
I am a STH. I can only speak for me, but I am more optimistic now, and more willing to continue to renew each year, than I have been over the the last couple years.
Conroy is enacting a full-on rebuild, while also trying to ice a team that will be somewhat entertaining, and will try to compete. If I see effort, and young players that provide hope and direction, I am happier as a fan than I was for the last while.
I don't know if it truly is a rebuild. With all this cap space burning a hole in his pocket, Conny will probably be active in Free Agency, in an attempt to ice a competitive team until all of these draft picks turn out. It's probably been mandated by Edwards.
I'm fine with that, as long as he isn't trading high picks for anything other than very young roster players. Make those picks!
I think people are mis-interpreting their use of the word competitive - they want the team to work hard, show up every night, have a good attitude, and compete. They aren't saying be competitive in the sense that they are trying to make the playoffs this year.
His statement yesterday was very telling: talking about how important the next couple drafts are for the organization. If thewy believe that, they aren't going to go out and sign UFAs in an attempt to get to 16th. They are going to sign UFSAs in attempt to continue to do the things I listed.

I'm pretty happy with this trade. I love the breadman and have been pulling for him since we drafted him, but he simply isn't playing up to his contract value. Add in we have a number of young guys coming up who also play wing and he's an easy one to decide to move on from.
I thought the return was also pretty good, especially since we aren't retaining. Provides added flexibility to open up a spot and use the money elsewhere if wanted. I like the timing for the team and player, as Royle says it allows the player the chance to maximize performance in a contract year. And for the team it shows the young guys there's a spot open if they can come in and grab it, hopefully one of them comes in strong and shows they're ready to take the next step.
Ah yes.. competiting and games are played on the ice.. not on the capfriendly page with contracts.. it is almost like Conroy is a player and wants the players to get the results on the ice.

I 100% understand your point, but you can get tickets to games for $45 a person if you use Seat Geek or something like it.

Aren't the reasons pretty clear?
1. You don't know if you can get a 2nd at the deadline
2. You don't get the advantage of the cap space you just cleared, that can be used in all sorts of ways

Yeah, like if Mangipane has 30 goals going into the deadline they might have got more. I totally thought he was worth a 5th or something due to his cap hit

Ticket prices aren't going to come down on the primary market. And for there to be a secondary market the tickets have to be sold in the first place.

Plus, if you wait, he could get injured prior to the deadline and you'll get nothing.
