He's played with backlund and coleman mostly so yeah I think his metrics are because of them.
I never liked Mangiapane from day 1 even when he was scoring on 1 of 3 or 4 shots he'd take. He tried hard his first few seasons and then seemed to mail it in.
I think this team will be better off without him not because I hate him but because I didn't think he was ever that good.

Love him or hate him, I would never doubt the motor on that guy or question his effort. He fell down a lot because he was an undersized guy trying to go to the dirty areas.
I wish him well.

Mangiapane is a good player but I am surprised at this return given his production and contract. Maybe The Athletic will give us a C+?

When he does sign someone don't be shocked if he uses the word 'playoffs' again. When he talks about the playoffs I think he knows they most likely aren't making them but still wants the team to have the mindset to try and get in rather than just play the season out.
|
I think any team has to believe that they can make the playoffs. Rebuild or no, I don't want any player who is happy with less.

Never would say soft or low IQ but his results were never in line with the compensation he was given after one good season.
This is a perfect example of the advanced stats not telling the real story.
His lack of talent to score goals (which is what his salary suggests he be doing) along with his apparent inability to remain on his feet during puck battles made him sorely over paid and easily replaced with a cheaper and probably younger player.
His defensive ability is above reproach for sure but that is not what this team needed out of that spot.
Of all the guys dealt in the last calendar year...he will be the least missed IMO.

Calgary was a completely different city back then. Let's not forget that. I believe it is a lot more vibrant now. Having a more vibrant city helps when the hockey team is doing poorly.

Surprised we havent made a thank you Mang thread. I think he was an important piece in the locker room and never really found it last year following the Sutter firing/Dube terminatiion season. A change of pace is going to help a guy like him. Wish him well in Washington and he is going to be missed in the room. Thanks again for working your ass off and turning into one of our developmental success stories for this franchise in recent years

Most of the metrics show that Mangiapane makes that line better, not worse.
There wasn't much good about the Flames the last two years, but the one thing on this team that was championship calibre was that third line and Mangiapane deserves his credit for that. He was paid way too much but I'd argue one of the better 3rd liners around. Treliving gave up a 2nd, 3rd and 7th to rent that kind of player in Jarnkrok a few years ago.

Mangiapane got paid based on the production of 40 good games
He never earned his contract after that
But overall, he was one of the better Flames draft picks and an overachiever based on initial expectation. Nobody should be disappointed with his career as a Flames

I'm fine with that, as long as he isn't trading high picks for anything other than very young roster players. Make those picks!
|
Signing UFAs on 1-3 year deals isn’t the worst, helps you ice a team while letting your young guys flourish and learn. You then turn these UFAs into ammunition for assets at the deadline every year.
Craig seems to be very adamant he’s not interested in older vets locked into long contracts. The only way I see him doing that is if we manage to snag a guy in that 18-25 age range who plans to be here when we’re competitive again.

Don't know why Conroy doesn't hang on to Mangiapane until the trade deadline if all he's getting is a second round pick in next year's draft anyway. Unless Mangiapane really wanted out of Calgary.

Clear salary now
If Mangipane has a bad year, nobody is going to give you a 2nd
Even if he had a good year, guys like him don’t return a 1st even with retention

So his agent is lying for what reason? He has came out and said they never saw it coming and didn't request a trade....

I wouldn't have waited until the deadline...
But there is an angle that it would have been wise to wait until day 2 of free agency or something. Maybe price goes up because he's the next best option to a team that missed out on a UFA they were targetting? Worst case I think you'd still get the same return we got today. We already had ample cap space for our own spending in free agency.

What do you think middle 6!wingers get back in trade at deadline? He certainly wasn’t going to get a first. As far as I’m concerned, Washington over paid .

I can’t answer that, I’m not his agent.
But he said either at the beginning or end of last season that he wasn’t happy with his game and the direction.
Don’t forget agents are just lip service, they’ll say whatever they want.. case point Zadorovs agent when he wanted to leave.
They have the players interest in mind and that’s it.
They would never come out and say “oh yea Andrew hated it here and we’re so thankful they finally traded him”
If your Andrew going into a contract season, do you want to do it on a rebuilding team that likely won’t be doing well? Or a contender with some elite players that might elevate your game and get you back to that 20-30g mark and increase your value?
I know what I’m picking.
Him wanting a change of scenery is no secret, but you’re free to beleive whatever you want!

Love him or hate him, but Frank S this morning was floored in the return for Calgary (i.e. thought the Flames did remarkably well in the trade). He speculated that if everything went perfect this season, i.e. say 20-25 goals or something at the deadline, the utmost ceiling would have been a 2nd - and good chance you may also have to retain in that.
