I disagree. IMO Sharangovich and Kuzmenko are here as 1-2 year reclamation projects. I think that Conroy intends to flip them for more draft capita/prospects/younger players at the deadline. That's the primary objective with those two players. It's not about icing a competitive team.
They are stripping down to the studs, but with some intelligence. In a similar vein, I would expect any UFAs they sign are 1-2 year contracts with overpay. So again...they can retain some salary and flip them for draft capital at the trade deadline.

I find it funny how people are complaining about the '25 first being protected when a couple of months ago, everyone was excited when the protected '25 first Vegas sent to Calgary turned into a '26 first the very next day (I know, it's not the same people and not the same reasons, but it still makes me laugh).
Either way, the Flames have 4 first round picks between the 2025 and 2026 Drafts. It will likely be 2 in each year, but could be 4 in 2026, which would be fun.

There is a (delusional) world where New Jersey falters next year enough to get the pick into the top 10, and the Flames end up holding both Vegas' and New Jersey's unprotected 2026 1st round picks....
Very unlikely given the trajectory of those teams, but a fun what-if to think about

It is another rebuilding trade, another young asset and a pick coming coming back. Really wonder if Conroy is exploring options with Andersson. He has a bit of a NHL defence now and could possibly trade Rasmus for more rebuilding pieces and pick up a UFA to replace Rasmus.
|
No it's not. Conroy said this trade shows we are building a playoff competitive team.
We are going for it.

The real question is would you rather have next years first (lets call it 20th) or a potential lottery ticket in 2026?. If only the flames could've gotten a choice condition on the pick.

Yeah it always sounded odd to me we were going to get the 10th overall pick for a 34 year old goalie, even with the 28th OA pick, but that was the word on the street/insiders, so it's a little disappointing it's next year's (protected) 1st.

Actions speak louder than words. He just traded a starting goalie to run with one of the worst tandems in the league. Bahl is a decent toss in but he is a toss in.
The Flames now have a bottom 5 dcore, a bottom 5 tandem, and a bottom ten forward core. Will people only believe a rebuild is happening if Conroy comes out directly and says buckle up the Flames will suck for three years.
He is still technically holding true to his definition of not rebuilding which is trading away every vet lol.
Markstrom was my barometer for what management was actually thinking. They didn't have to trade him and they were going to get worse by doing it.

If things go south enough that New Jersey drafts in the top 10 again then that 2026 pick becomes insanely valuable. Fitz is gone and Keefe is on the hot seat - it’s definitely the preferred outcome

Right but did he say when? We just got a 3rd pairing dman and a 1st in 2025. How are those 2 pieces going to help us this year?

I really like Pat Steinberg but I’m listening now and he’s doing pretty obvious PR damage control for the Flames.
Don’t do it Pat. Not a good look.

Time to worry about how the flames will use up all their cap space to float a 17th place team.
|
Honest question cause I've never understood how getting to the cap floor is a problem. Couldn't you just sign somebody to a 1 year crazy over-payment if you really needed to get to the floor?

Glad the Flames are continuing to ship out the malcontents. Markstom had to go. Getting a first rounder and a young NHL defenceman for an aging inconsistent goalie is good asset management. Not a slam dunk win, but the right thing to do.
To me, Markstrom will always be the Flames goalie who made Trevor Kidd and Brian Elliott look like a strong playoff performers. The way he quit on this team during the Edmonton series pretty much killed any goodwill from me. He never seemed to get up for big games including against our top rivals. Of all the guys we shipped out this year this is the one guy that deserves unrelenting boos from Flames fans.
