In most of the deals Conroy has made, the Flames got a decent roster player back - Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, and Bahl are all solid NHLers. Management is not stripping it down to the studs - they want to ice a competitive team every season. The playoffs are probably a long shot next season, but this isn’t a team that’s deliberately aiming for a bottom-of-the-league finish.

I believe in the Jays.
|
I'm kind of surprised that Allen wasn't in the deal. I would have thought that with Markstrom they'd want to roll with him and Schmid. Guess they want a veteran tandem (or maybe they think they can recoup the draft capital they spent on him at the deadline in another trade).

I don wonder if Holtz was on the table and they preferred bahl. Maybe it was Holtz and a 2nd or 1st and Bahl

Considering that the pick is top 10 protected, we can safely assume that this year's 1st was never in play.
I haven't seen yet. What are the stipulations on the pick? If it's top 10 does it roll over to 2026 or do we get screwed and get a 2nd?

I love it, great trade.
More happy as it'll hopefully ensure a better pic next year. Plus gives Wolf a lot more playing time. Have to start developing him in the NHL.
The return seems underwhelming when thinking a top 10 pic was in play, which would have been amazing. IMO Devils GM would have to be stupid with the projected talent 10 and under, to do that for just 2 years of Markstrom in his mid 30s. Been super happy with the work Conroy has done since taking over. Don't spend that cap $, grow from the draft and let's get back to building a strong team for the new building! Hopefully not wishful thinking.
Even harder to maximize the return if the report is true and Markstrom only wanted to go to NJ.

He's not a bad player. Got in 82 games last year, kills PK, was a 55th pick. He was playing second pairing at the end of this year according to the interwebs.
In the box all the time is a bit of a stretch. 82 PMs. Compare with Zadorov's 125.

Also I don’t give a squirt of piss what the front office says this is a rebuild. Call it what you want but not having a starting goalie signals full rebuild. No re-signing these short timers, ship out kuz and anyone else not on an NMC next.
|
Like seriously that was never going to happen....

Virtually every single person on this site when I told them they weren't getting holtz, weren't getting the 2024 1st, and were gonna be retaining.
Join San Jose fans as those convinced you're getting Holtz+Mercer+1st and getting nothing close.
Bahl will be a decent piece.
His dog#### passing made him ineffective in NJD (and he takes so many dumb penalties).
But solid defensively and can PK quite well. Enjoy

This was the least fun trade process ever, months of talking about all these great pieces, top ten picks, Dawson Mercer, Alexander Holtz and we get a late first and a guy who is seems close to waiver fodder. Worst than the Regehr trade.
Not that the value isn't fair, I think this would be about what you'd expect for an older goalie, but man expectations got set sky high

Eh, I disagree. Trading Markstrom to run with a tandem of Wolf and Vladar basically guarantees a bottom 5 finish.

By getting someone already in the NHL. Obviously he's not going to push them into a playoff team himself but he's someone who can help them now rather than years from now or maybe never.

I've never seen that in a deal. It's always a rollover to the following year's first.

Seems like a decent return, the pick protection sucks but an old goalie for a mid to low first sounds fine. We were never going to get premium futures for our teardown outside of crazy luck, it’s all about maximizing the value of our own firsts the coming years.
Time to worry about how the flames will use up all their cap space to float a 17th place team.

There can be conditions like that but then it'd probably be written as a conditional 1st basis the Devils and Markstrom hitting something. Protected pick is just a pure roll.

Who can we trade now? I am already missing making trade proposals for Flames players. Seems like with the FAs and Markstrom now gone... no one else coming up urgently.

It’s time we start looking at this as an asset in a trade
Markstrom turned into Kipper when it came to making our pick worse and Brian Elliot when the pressure got turned up

I like the idea of getting a Zadorov comparable. Could be fun to watch at least if the team is bad.
