Nobody wants to wait. That makes it less valuable for trading
We have seen it over and over in sports.

I doubt it. If the Flames make it to the 2nd round this year, Montreal can claim our 1st round pick. Or they can roll the dice and hope for a better pick in 2025 or 2026.
What do you think they'll do?

Conroy should hate Vancouver! Never forget '04, Craig! I certainly don't.

I'd rather the boon from retaining 50 percent each on Lindholm and Hanifin at their time of being traded. That's astronomical value no matter which way you cut it.

He was months from coming off the books, regardless.
Conroy'd better have something in mind for that space this season then.

I wonder if it could be something like Hanifin for Ekblad/Chabot would definitely make the Flames a different team, though not sure if they'd be better.

I don't know, I'm really starting to like Shango. And Suniev ain't a nobody. I don't have an issue with his first trade given that the alternative was an old, expensive Toffoli here long term.
It was good asset management that will likely pay more dividends in the coming months/year.

Eklblad and Lundell+ for Lindy and Hanifin?
That's so crazy it might work.

Retaining is the key if they want to maximize what they get back. I'm guessing similarly underwhelming returns if they don't.

We should really just shut the forum down now. You’ve completely proven there’s no point in anyone having any thoughts, opinions or discussion unless we’re GMs.

Two pages and a beer later.
If this trade was made to clear cap space so the Flames could make follow up trades focused on the now to make use of that cap space?
#%^* this.
Take the 3rd and the 5th and focus on the tank. Lindy, Tanev, and Hanifin out the gawt dang door for futures is the path forward. Anything else is stupid.

Ekblad probably would be available but the cap doesn't work. And they could never re-sign those guys.

Just having to deal with a guy named Alvin (or Allvin) should be enough to hate the organization by extension.
I'd never let a guy with that name get the better of me in a deal.

I agree with the posters that are saying you need to include the cap space in the return and you cannot judge the return until we see what the Flames do or not do with that space - we will know by the trade deadline, at the latest. One poster said the $3.75M cap space would create $5.0M space by the TDL. How much is that worth? A 3rd? 2nd? 1st???
At a minimum, the return is two 3rds and a 5th in the worst-case scenario I outlined. I'm guessing they get more than a 3rd if they weaponize the cap space. I think it was The Scorpion who asked when was the last time the Flames weaponized cap space so maybe they don't utilize it. Then again, I don't recall the last time the Flames actually had cap space to weaponize.

Opening up the cap space on our side also drastically increases the suitors for Lindholm and Hanifin. Especially if its taking back a deal with more then 1 year remaining, allowing them to fit there extensions going forward.
We bought Zadorov for a 3rd, he has been a UFA since then. We lost that 3rd when he tested the market, if anything we got lucky he circled back.
People are awfully hard on Conroy for this disaster of a team/cap situation he inherited.
I have a hunch there could be wall of shame worthy posts in this thread post trade deadline.

If the Flames pick 20-32 in 2024 then Montreal has the option to claim that and end the whole saga. But I bet they don't.

Sharangovich is a now player and while he's been better of late he's nowhere near as good as Toffoli and will likely never be. He's the type of player you hope to get with the 3rd round pick they just received. Like I said before Toffoli and Zadorov (and I'm not even a big fan) >> Sharangovich and two 3rd round picks. If the Flames aren't going to improve on the ice with these trades they need to aim higher than 3rd round picks.

I have no problem with Conroy's two trades so far. Before the trade, I was hoping for a 2nd, but realistically it seems like trade values across the league have dropped due to every team being cap strapped. The 3rd in 2026 is sort of frustrating because of impatience.
I see many comments comparing the returns for Toffoli and Zad against what we will get in the future for our most valuable UFAs. I think many people need to lower their expectations based on trade returns seen across the league. We should expect at least 6 more draft picks for Lindholm/Hanifin/Tanev and with our draft record and the players in the pipeline there is actually some hope for a quicker turnaround then most would have guessed at the start of this year.
