He reminds me of Slafkovsky based on two minutes of highlights.
Big kid, long reach, wide base, looks like he’ll be a handful.

I'm not especially excited about this pick, but I'm willing to see how it goes. And the 1st rounder isn't always the money pick. Back in 2011 we drafted Sven Baerstschi @ 13th... and John Gaudreau at 104th

I'd add Zary and Poirier to that list.

Well, well, Conroy said they had a couple opportunities to trade down.
Probably could've gotten away with it and picked up another pick. Oh well.

That would be my answer too. With more upside than Coronato.

I really hope we start graduating some of these guys to the pro roster and infuse some much needed youth into the lineup next season (maybe not Honzek yet).

Conroy in his interview with Friedman pointed out how he had watched the guy all year and liked the improvement he saw from beginning to end.
I very much got the vibe that this was Conroys guy....which is fine since he too was watching guys all year and its ultimately his decision.
Im guessing Button and company didnt disagree either.

Again based on what?
He was projected to go right in this range.
The Flames were apparently ecstatic to get him.
Doesn't seem smart to trade down and risk not getting him.

The Monahan comparison is interesting as he chose #23...
Bold prediction, Honzek becomes our eventual 1C and the argument shifts from not a great pick at #16 to not a true 1C.

In the same article, NHL executives were asked who their favourite WHL prospect after Bedard was.
Executive 4: “Samuel Honzek does everything well. He’s fast, skilled, he can score and create offense for his teammates. He works hard. He can create from the perimeter, he can be a net-front guy, and can kill penalties, and does all of this in a 6-foot-4 frame. There’s so much more pro in his game than the other choices.”
Executive 5: “It’s between Danielson and Honzek for me. I lean Danielson because of the position. Both have NHL bodies and skating ability, produce offense and are two-way guys.”

Good chance of being a player still but if we can trust the pro scouts he may have let a future star slip by him.
We'll see..

Better than Weisbrod picking Jankowski cause he watched a game after he got stuck in a blizzard.

I'd love to see Honzek tear it up at camp and earn an NHL audition/stint in october.
I like the idea of him returning to Vancouver to develop more and wear the C there, but also wouldn't complain if he pulled a Monahan.

I really like this pick. Mind you I have been on record stating the flames needed size and skill combos.
I feel like Honzie is that. He skates really Well considering his size. Lots of good comments about his edge work. I saw quite a few highlights of him taking the puck to the net with authority. He has nice soft hands in tight. His puck possession seems really strong. He adjusted to the smaller ice quite successfully until that freak injury. He seems to have good iq to add to his tool kit both offensively and defensively. Prorating his stats and he out produces a bunch of players. I see why Connie was so excited.
He needs some more development for sure but he has tools and has skills. Decent pick for our range. Which amateur doesn’t need more development though? I think this guy will play at 220 with good edges and soft hands. That, at 6’4 is tantalizing. His puck protection at that size would be elite which this team has struggled with over the years. Johnny had it until teams would jump him on that button hook inside the zone. Hopefully Honzie can be developed at center. He needs to increase his motor but that can be addressed hopefully. He could be a rantanen like player for us. And at 6’4 he could still be growing. Lots to like with this pick.
I can’t believe there were so few trades in this first round. No move ups nor move backs.

Based on Bingos pre draft cumulative rankings, this reeks of a Feaster length film pick where the protagonist is the smartest man in the room. Hope I'm wrong.

Well for starters, based on the fact that Conroy just said he had a couple offers to trade down "just slightly".

Right. So you trade down 2 spots to get a mid round pick and lose the guy you wanted.
You trade down when you have a cluster of players that you don't really distinguish between.
You don't trade down when you have a guy ahead of a cluster.
