FWIW San Jose also had a claim in on Stewart as per Duhatchek

Three times, actually.
  • February 19, 2011 (not quite the deadline, but close enough) from Colorado to St Louis in the Erik Johnson trade.
  • February 28, 2014 from St Louis to Buffalo in the Ryan Miller trade.
  • March 2, 2015 from Buffalo to Minnesota.
They talked to him on TSN today and Duthie was laughing about how in 2015, Duthie was the one who told him where he was going. He knew Buffalo was going to move him, so when he got a call from TSN, he answered it knowing it meant he had been traded, but he hadn't been contacted by the GM yet to tell him where.

Sorry, it's probably been discussed a dozen times already ... but why does a 'character guy' with 'lots of skill' and only a million+ expiring contract get put on waivers?

Something is obviously not right about the player.
The Wild were very tight against the Cap. Waiving him gave them some flexibility in trading today (they didn't use it, but they had it).

Who knew that blowing all of those third period leads would actually help us this year

Per sureloss in yesterday's waiver thread:

Pretty good claim imo, don’t understand the nay sayers. Literally a zero risk acquisition and if he works out hopefully we could re-sign him for a bottom 6 role.

I like this move for a couple of reasons.

First it didn't cost us a draft pick or any prospects. Even if he doesn't pan out, it cost you nothing.

Stewart is going to be motivated. He's on an expiring contract and needs to show something if he hopes to get a contract offer from some team in the off season.

So, we think Stewart is going to be in the line-up tomorrow? Watching Gulutzan's interview, it seems very possible.

He said he will be in Dallas tomorrow. Apparently catching a flight this afternoon.

Shore says he couldn't get a flight out of Ottawa today. His flight is tomorrow and not sure if he will make it in time for morning skate.

With Ferland out, Stewart's probably in for one of Mangipane or Hathaway is my guess.

I like this move. Flames gave up nothing. Stewart has always been a mean jerk to play against on the 3-4th line.
He is a real hand full for the opposition especially in the corner and against the boards, Flames can always use another rugged player like Chucky.
Stewert still has speed as a skater too.
It will be interesting when Ferland comes back who gets bumped out of the lineup.

I would love to see Bennett stay on the top line because it seems to have given him some jump. But I think that would make a really hard to play against third line in Ferland/Janko/Stewart. We need a line that can score and bash. I think this does that.

You have to think that Stewart will be coming i n with some fire in his belly. Claimed off waivers, expiring contract. Going into thirties.

I really like the look of the Janko, Ferly, Stewart line. could be a train wreck of a line for other teams to handle if that group found some chemistry.

Got to wonder if SJ goes after Kane if they got Stewart earlier in the day. Obviously different players but SJ didn't add anyone else, so maybe they started exploring other options when their claim didn't go off, and they started deeper down the Kane path due to lack of any other options.

And then you wonder if the Flames act differently if they know they wanted Stewart but lost the claim on him to a division rival no less, and then they go hunting in a different direction and maybe willing to meet Bufs price for Kane.

Stewart was a thorn against the Flames scoring goals, didn't matter who he played for..Good that he is on our side now..Should be interesting..

Stewart is exactly what this team needs. I'm pretty stoked.

As much as I like Ferland he doesn't loose his mind on people taking liberty's on Gaudreau enough, Stewart will pot the odd goal and won't really hurt you defensively but he will do is go on full crazy attack mode when the smaller/skilled players are getting roughed up, and we won't need chucky to fight the whole LA defense anymore when he picks on Doughty

I'm sure he will get some playing time bottom 6 and his play will determine how much. Getting paid what Brouwer should be lol
