QUOTE
If anyone thinks all this rash of hurricanes doesn't have to do with Global Warming, they are just ostrich's wth their heads in the sand. The engine that fuels hurricanes is warm waters and the Gulf of Mexico has been about 2 degrees above normal for about 2 years now.

The National Hurricane Centers Director Max Mayfield and Deputy Director Ed Rappaport both must be wearing a full set of feathers and laying eggs then. They both vehemently disagree with what you say. Hope you aren't bothered that i believe them above you.

This is a cyclical thing that was predicted to happen many years ago...it will slow down again in about 5 years for a decade or so and then come back with a fury as the last two years have been. Its been that way since they started keeping records. Sorry.
This is from the Main Forum. I figured I would answer it here.
First quote is TPA_TPC, the Second is Transplant 99.

I think that Mr. Mayfield and Rappaport have too many political and bureaucratic interests at stake. Clearly they have done a lot of ass kissing to get to where they are. The preponderance of evidence against them is overwhelming. Go to google and type in "Global warming hurricane" and see what you get. Do some reading.

Seems to be standard in politics to pretend there are scientific debates about these things by taking the opinion of 2 guys and saying they carry equal weight against entire scientific communities.

Seems to be a double standard of using scientific research from some areas and using them when there just as many scientific research papers and opinions that shoot down YOUR theory and beliefs.

Looking at the last few years of Atlantic hurricanes...

98... 10 hurricanes

99... 8 hurricanes

00... 8 hurricanes

01... 9 hurricanes

02... 4 hurricanes

03... 7 hurricanes

04... 9 hurricanes

Wheres the dramatic increase from 7 years ago?? If its all about global warming causing more of these things...why isnt there more of them last year than 6 years ago? Why only 4 in 02?...is it because we stopped driving cars that year or something? Or is it because, like i have said and ALL the hurricane experts say....because its a very cyclical thing?

Oh and by the way? Rappaport and Mayfield ARE scientists. They don't need to play the politics game...its not like he is a conservative lackey for god sakes.

Here is a short bio on him.

And contractors working of the levee's came under fire today as well. Thankfully the cops managed to kill 5 (I think) of the gunmen.

MOD EDIT: Link Removed

A little information about how the refugees are treating volunteers. I really do believe that NOLA was filled with some of the worst people on the planet. Reading this doesn't suprise me that there were people shooting @ rescue workers.

Laugh. Thanks for linking to a nice racist diatribe.

If you believe all that you are a stupid person.

Saw today the American Red Cross handing out Visas with $2000 each on them to victims. That's nice. I hope people don't blow the money. That's two months rent as well as new clothes.

I am sure that many of the people will definately blow the money and then whine about the fact that they need more.

on a related note: I golfed with a fellow that was the president of the Alberta society of Engineers (technologists?) the other day, and he said the US is going to have rebuild something like 300 000 homes in the next few years. To put that into perspective, apparently Alberta has 10-15 000 new home starts per annum.

The US will soon be buying up every shred of wood (with or without softwood tax) Canada can offer to assist in the rebuild, which is going to increase the cost of housing here in Calgary. Supposedly local builders are projecting a minimum 20% increase within 8 months, with 5% already being added over the last few weeks.

Moral of the story: If you are planning to buy a house this year it might be a good idea to do it now.

Hmm do you know of any listed Canadian companies that sell lumber? I am curious to watch their stock to see if and how much it goes up.

There's an old Wall Street saying that goes: "A good war never hurt nobody."

Lots of rebuilding, lots of government spending, etc, etc . . . . and the stock market has been going up, the brutal judgement of a dollar bill as bodies float in the street.

Anyway, as per my earlier rants in other threads regarding the Mayor of New Orleans, a black man that Kanye West apparently forgot, the first of what are sure to be many articles examining the failure of local officials to mitigate the human cost through proper local disaster planning . . . the Washington Post this morning:
