Was this after the cut down in his ice time and then the healthy scratch?

Interview was during the prospect camp or the main camp, can't remember exactly when.

If I was Hartley, I would make these two room together on road trips, and when I sent Byron out for a shift without Sven, I would whisper into Sven's ear: "If you played with this much heart and urgency in your game each and every shift, not only would I give you all the ice time you could handle, but you would be on your way to becoming a star in this league.". I would argue that Byron deserves to be playing with better line mates than Sven, actually. I can't think of a better influence and a better line mate to Sven than Byron, actually.

An excellent post. This excerpt is especially spot on. I never thought of Byron that way, but now having read it, he is exactly the right guy for Baertschi to emulate.

Well I think Sven had his best game last night. He was creating chances and looking dangerous on the offensive side. Can't speak to his defensive game but I didn't notice any gaffs but he still needs to win some puck battles.

Pretty much how I felt as well. He was decent defensively and only made a couple minor errors, but that will get better with regular playing time and teaching moments from the coaching staff. He still needs to get more engaged physically to stick with the big club. Improvements have definitely come, so I'm satisfied. I just want him to keep refining his game now.

Stop derailing the thread!
Haha, I tried this a few pages back, unless you're talking about how much Baertschi is a disappointment nobody cares, lol.
Carry on...

Yup. He played well in the minutes he got. If he can play the same tomorrow and Monday, hopefully his minutes and line combinations will start to improve.

Yes once he is cleared by the doctors.
However, there is still some time. Colborne is not skating with the main group yet.

I thought Sven had a decent game last night.
Sometimes though, I wonder if Sven is like the kid in high school who was able to get A's and B's without working very hard or studying much.
Then he moves on to University, which is much more difficult, and all of a sudden he's C & D student who's a bit lost because he never developed those good study/work habits.
Some turn it around and become A students... some just drop out because they can't get their act together.
... just a thought.

“Sven is the same guy every day and likes to compete and get after it,” said Ward. “You can tell he has some special gifts, but he’s always upbeat and looks forward to practice and has a lot of respect for the game. I said I’ll be hard on him and he said he wants nothing but hard.
“He handles himself beyond his years and is a little old school.”

“We were going to get a quality guy who’s willing work,” recalled Johnston, a former Vancouver Canucks assistant coach. “His habits are exceptional and after practice he worked on having pucks passed to him at full speed and he’d try to pick them off his stick and feet — all the little tricks — over and over again. It reminded me of Paul Kariya. Right from Day 1, he loved to be on the ice.
“He’s not cocky, but he’s confident and humble enough to know that he’s got to work. Sometimes, he challenges guys head-to-head a little too often but his all-round game is solid. And he has the mental skill to handle the ups and downs. He doesn’t let things bother him.”

Great post Ashasx, thanks. I think its easy for us internet wankers to go "oh he's pouting or whining" or junk like that, because we don't know anything. I don't know anything either, but if I'm a betting man, I would wager that nobody wants to improve and make the NHL and takes the critisism for his play then Sven. For all our sake, I hope he stays positives and gets that competitive edge back..... I still think he'll be a player, the road there just might not be smooth.

Because most articles referencing work ethic are written for draft eligible (or newly drafted) prospects.
There does not exist many articles written for 21+ year old players regarding the same subject.
So if you want to assume that a player, who has been renown for his work ethic and dedication, has suddenly given it up, that's fine. You can draw your own conclusions. I'm not getting into an argument.
I had an article on his work after practice with Huska, but for whatever reason the Sun website is down.

If we read most draft articles about players we'd think we had a league full of superstars. They are usually written as puff pieces.
I have always liked Baertschi's work ethic, but articles from 3 years ago doesn't prove anything. Players change.
