completely agree, I think the 'redemption' story is one of the best in the books

I was hoping for an upturn after slogging through AFFC. It just seems more of the same.
Mormont just reappeared for me after taking Tyrion into custody, so hopefully things start picking up.
I am very disappointed that there is another claim to the throne from the Targaryen kid.

I read all five books in succession and books 4 and 5 were clearly inferior. I wasn't affected by the wait or the anticipation or any of that. The writing just wasn't as good (parts were flat out bad) and the story meandered too much. That's the basic criticism, first three books alot of things happen, last two books very little happens.

And he keeps repeating his damn self.
GRRM fake your death and get a substitute writer, Sanderson's doing what Jordan never could have done with WoT, go that route.

Meh. I enjoy that the WoT is continuing but I don't particularly enjoy Sanderson's writing.

I honestly felt that the second and third books were far superior to the fourth and fifth.
That usually happens with a series though, especially with Wheel of Time, the middle is horrible.

Where does the horrible middle of WoT start? I am almost done book 6 and it is still pretty awesome.

From my recollection I think books 7, 8 and 10 were the weakest; book 9 bucked the trend slightly by moving the plot forward in the last few chapters. I did find books 4 through 6 to be a step below the first 3 though.

Ya I would say 7-10 could have been accomplished in just a few more chapters of books 6 and 11.
Enjoy :P

just finished reading the series, so now i can finally come into this thread without fear. i stumbled in here sometime before, read something about Rob's death, then NOPE'ed my way out quite quickly. funny, even though i knew Rob was going to die, i had no idea how or when, so the RW was still a massive shock. can't wait to see how that plays out on the show

Some pictures up of season 3 that were posted in the Game of Thrones thread:
http://www.imdb.com/media/index/rg353147392
Looks like they did a good job on casting so far, really like the Black Fish. I expect some great gritty acting from Baric and Thoros as well.
The Red Wedding is just a few months away, the masses are going to go nuts with frustration. Very few parts in a book have made me drop the book saying what the fudge as I read it..

I would still spoiler that to be kind that someone doesn't fall into the same fate you did. Just polite is all.

Ya thats right, there is a spoiler tag.
I was just going through the wiki of this series, I have my crackpot theories, but I still think that Lord Reed will play a major part in this story. He knows a secret.. a big secret involving Ned's sister.

Fair warning, spoilers below, but it's a spoiler thread so I'm not covering them.
Jon being her son has been brought up multiple times in this thread. I watched the first couple episodes of A Game of Thrones before reading the books but very early on in the show Ned told Jon that they would talk about his mother and it seemed important enough that there was a certain mystery to it.
When reading the books with that in mind I didn't get to the end of A Game of Thrones before I bought into Jon being her son. I feel like GRRM would be doing a rewrite if that doesn't end up being the case, the stories of Ashara, Wylla and the fishermen's wife or whatever that we end up hearing later seem almost to draw the scent away from the big reveal 20 years later that wont (shouldn't) be all that surprising to the faithful followers.
The Kingsguard protecting Lyanna at the tower of joy should raise some questions. When Ned flat out starts asking them why they aren't with Viserys (the apparent King at this time) I feel like that should have raised a huge question mark when their one oath is to protect the King and they don't even care about Viserys.

I think the first comment pretty much sums up my opinion of this news.

Agreed. Don’t want a Robert Jordan reboot where the author dies before the series ended – but at least Jordan had a plan and had already identified an author to complete the series prior to his demise.

Martin has done the same thing. he's already explained to the HBO writers how his series is going to end in case he doesn't end up finishing the books, so that the TV series doesn't just end abruptly
