This. I don't think there is a safer country in the world to walk around freely anytime of day.

Authorities analyze security footage of attack...

Quote:
Mexican authorities say they have security footage of the brutal atack on a Canadian tourist who was left badly beaten in a hotel elevator.

On Wednesday, the Mexican government revealed that they have a new development in the investigation.

The Governor of Sinaloa State visited Nabb in hospital on Tuesday and told a Mexican journalist that they have videos from the hotel that will help explain what happened that night.

Mario Lopez Valdez says they have new information in the investigation and that an announcement is coming soon.

In the interview, he says they now believe the attack on Nabb was internal not external, but would not say if locals were involved.

DR is nothing like Haiti. They share the same island, but that is about it. DR is very much like Mexico; the difference is the people are poorer. They also know that tourism is the only source of money coming into their town, so they tend to be a little more friendly.

Mexico is not Japan, Switzerland, or any other relatively "safe" country. People should be aware of that, because it's the "head in the sand" syndrome that leads to bad fortune. Street smarts are essential in just about any place you go.

No one is saying you're going to get shot at a resort just for showing up; but the country's track record is taking a pounding lately, especially since incidents are happening at these resorts. On top of that, it's not just the crime, it's also safety issues in general - that hotel that had that explosion last year is one such incident, and numerous incidences at beaches (both in the media and ones I've seen with my own eyes) are frequent. I'm sure its a combination of human idiocy and hotel procedures, but they do add up. I've also been sick twice at four-star resorts in Mexico from the food, so I have a general distrust going down there.

95 out of a 100 times Mexico is usually safe. But believe it or not, people will not go there because of the safety issue - including some CP'ers like myself.
I wasn't singling anyone out but the fear mongering in this thread and by the media is pretty funny from my point of view.

You said yourself that you've been there several times so you obviously weren't scared enough to not go the second and third time. I also find it odd that you went back after being sick once at a four star hotel. Did you not think that eating in Mexico was probably a bad idea after getting sick the first time?

Mexico isn't Canada or Japan, but it sure ain't as bad as people are making it out to be.

On another note...it's going to be quite ironic if I get killed down there in a couple weeks after all these posts.

If all I wanted to do was park my butt on the beach and drink heavily I would have no qualms about Mexico. At the same time I know of two friends who were killed at Mexican beach resorts in separate incidents, by rogue waves of all things. Frankly, I get bored by the beach after a couple of days. I like to golf on my vacations, and Mexico is ridiculously overpriced in this regard. Give me Nevada, Utah or Arizona or various other USA destinations. Thousands of cheap golf courses and most of the people I interact with are of the same socioeconomic group as me, so I blend in easily. And the US justice system, though flawed, is well established, predictable and relatively uncorrupted.

There is a large Mexican/Guatemalan population in the town next to mine. yeah, we gripe about how many kids they have and how they fill the emergency room. But they are basically really sweet people. The stories they have told us are so incredibly sickening you can't help but be more sympathetic to their situation.
One guy said he either had to become a drug dealer, a corrupt cop, or be killed. Great choices.

I haven't been to Mexico in seven years. I gave it a go a second time (at a different resort) thinking that it was a one-off incident, and it happened twice. To be fair, these were the all-inclusive packages where the food is free, so its fair game when it comes to bulk amounts of low quality food.

I haven't done a beach vacation since then, but I think the next one will likely be down to the Bahamas or Aruba.

Yup. But by the same token, we had to cancel a follow up trip last year due to a "minor nuclear power plant/earthquake/tsunami issue".

As an additional aside, I found it . . . strange to have the need for women only transit trains in a first world country.

Thought it was kind of ironic that he included Aruba considering the first thing that popped into my head was Natalee Holloway.

Well I was going to make a longer post about it, but I make so much more money than you that it isn't worth discussing anything with you, so I left it at the one word comment.

Anywho, pretty sure if I have a choice of tropical destinations, the place where multiple stories appear regarding deaths, stabbings, murder, corruption and an explosive illicit drug epidemic would lose to... well, pretty much other places that don't seem to have these stories pop up.

Regardless of 'blowing it out of proportion' or not.
