Two seasons of Gaudreau for five seasons of Marner. Flames would have to add and I'm not sure there's an appetite to trade Marner.

Johnny has value because of his cap hit, Marner might have negative value because of his.

Maybe add in Kylington or another depth defenseman as the Leafs have a need for more.

If the team targets Marner as the return for Gaudreau, they might as well just keep the team together. The leafs would want a lot more than 2 years of a player that will leave as soon as possible and a depth defender.
If they trade Gaudreau, it'll be for futures and then they'll sign Hall to replace Gaudreau on the first line.

I have a connection to a source “in the know”, and here are just a few small tidbits I’ve received from him.
-Flames will be in on Holtby
-Johnny being traded and/or Hall being signed are things that they can definitely see happening this offseason.

This has Eric Francis written all over it. Holtby would be the exact disaster Francis would love to write and talk about.

Holtby is not my top choice but he is surprisingly only turning 31 next month. His numbers were not ideal this year but he is a proven goalie, western Canadian, and has won a cup.
I am encouraged if they are looking to get that proven number 1. Just prefer Lehner or Markstrom. Holtby probably cheaper and more likely to sign here

Monahan + Gaudreau
We offset the production of Gaudreau with Hall and Hischier would be Monahan's replacement. Woods is the perfect player for this team. Young, physical, and very fast! He's put up decent numbers and would thrive in the West. Not to mention adding a legit blue chip prospect.
This trade makes us younger, potentially (I think likely) more skilled, and extends a window for a new core: Tkachuk, Lindholm, Andersson, Mangi, Dube, Valimaki, Hischier, Hall, 7th overall.

Signing Holtby would be such a Flames move. Such a Flames move that satirical website even predicts the Flames to overpay for Holtby;
https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=180395
He hasn't posted starting goaltender quality stats since the 2016/17 season and is trending down sharply.

Yeah but a one year "show me" contract might be the route they go. I'd be fine with that (assuming a reasonable cap hit), even with Holtby putting up less than stellar results the past couple of seasons

So New Jersey would get the two best players in the deal, by a wide margin, and its a no? Hischier is a Backlund level player. Gusev a second line player IF he repeats this performance. Wood is a third liner. The best piece Jersey gives up is the #7, and that is magic beans. If you were offered Wheeler and Schiefele or Marchand and Pasternak for Backlund, Mangipane, Ryan, and a 1st, you wouldn't take it and run? I think Jersey is all over that, and the Flames regret it like crazy in short order.

Backlund was drafted in 2007 and didn't really establish himself as an NHLer until 2013-2014.

Not sure how you can be so down on Hischier offensively yet praise Frost. These guys are the same age and one has a 0.65ppg over 200 games and the other has 0.35 over the course of 20 games.
Hischier is hopefully a Couturier level player who can get Selke nominations and put up 70+pts.
If the Flames could get Hischier and 7 for Monahan and Gaudreau I think that would be a fantastic deal for the org if the game plan is retool while remaining competitive. It frees up $6M to sign Hall and goes from 26 year old Centre to a guy that won’t be 22 until 2021.
The 7 pick is a great asset as well. Personally I think Gusev and Wood are asking too much.

I think that the expectations on a 1st overall pick are much higher. Like it's sort of like, if Hischier was a 24th overall pick or something and had the same career, maybe he would be seen as more promising because he surpassed expectations?

Fair he is not a franchise player superstar and Heiskenan, Malta, and Pettersson are all nicer players taken after Nico.
I wasn’t that high on Hischier and saw Dissentowner post a lot of glowing praise for him and I did some of my own research. Many see him as a future captain and his 2 way game is underrated. To get a 200ft guy that can contribute the same offensively as Monahan while also being able to play the hard minutes with our franchise winger are things to covet.
The cap hit is a bit high but 8 year term makes this a long term investment. I don’t think the Devils consider moving Nico due to the fact he is signed. I think they are definitely going to be in the Gaudreau mix.

A young, cost controlled and relatively more advanced Backlund sounds pretty good.
The more two way players you can have, the better your team is.
I don’t know that the deal is that far off. I don’t care for Gusev but definitely want Myles Wood.
With the over supply of young left side defensemen, I wonder if you could put Kylington in the deal and grab Severson as well.
Gaudreau
Monahan
Kylington
For
Hischier
Severson
Wood
17th overall
I think that helps both teams. Devils get a local boy and American superstar to sell tickets and to along with Jack Hughes and Kyle Palmieri. They get a bigger centre in Monahan to replace Hischier.
Flames get a young two way centre, a young right side defense who has familiarity with Huska, a big bottom 6 forward similar to Bennett, and an extra first round pick in a deep draft.
You make this deal if you can land another top 6 forward in free agency with Hall being number 1 choice.

I think trading Gaudreau and Monahan together may actually limit their value. Combo doesn't work in Calgary for the playoffs why would it work elsewhere
