Ok I like like lindholm a lot. but my point is that meat and potatoes defencemen usually turn out to be good dmen. Where players with high potential that are little usually flake out. Not every great defencemen plays in the mold of niedermeyer, Coffey, Keith or doughty. Especially in the modern era the most effective defencemen are big, fast, shut down types like Suter, Weber, and pietrangelo who use both size and speed to control the game.

Immaturity and weight are easily fixable, especially if he's on a team where all the players work their asses off day in and day out - not to mention Hartley runs some ridiculously gruelling practices.

If we do draft Ritchie, weight/maturity is of very little concern to me as long as Hartley stays and the culture remains.

Unless I'm mistaken all of those posts were by Ashasx, who weaselled out of proving it after being called out extensively by multiple people.

Can't see them taking Dal Colle over any of Reinhart, Ekblad or Bennett though.
Yeah if the Isles want Dal Colle over one of those guys (cuz somebody else took Leon), they should drop down at least a spot and acquire an asset.

Your tune hasn't changed much.

And btw, Horvat was drafted 7 spots ahead of Zadorov.

Shut up already, Jesus.

Burke himself said that he has ONE defenceman ranked in his top ten. I'm assuming it's Ekblad, so unless Fleury falls to ~35th overall, there is zero chance of the Flames drafting him. This whole argument has been completely irrelevant.

Bogosian was supposed to be a meat and potatoes guy, so were Gudbranson and Schenn. Dylan McIlrath was the definition of a meat and potatoes d-man.

Griffin Reinhart was a meat and potatoes d-man too but Islanders would probably rather have Lindholm, Trouba, etc at this point.

Nothing wrong with meat and potatoes d-men, you just shouldn't take them with top 5 picks.

The guys you stated aren't the meat and potatoes guys IMO.

Pietrangelo is a dynamic player with great offensive instincts, Trouba is a physical monster with a good shot, Lindholm is a good puck mover with great hockey sense and offensive instincts.

And those guys all developed a ton post draft. That is the issue with d-men using a top 5 pick on them is a toss up because they take longer to develop and are more risky to develop, a forward is more of a sure thing.

Do you want Victor Hedman or Matt Duchene? Erik Gudbranson or Ryan Johansen? Adam Larsson or Ryan Strome? Ryan Murray or Alex Galchenyuk? Mackinnon or Jones? Sean Monahan or Darnell Nurse?

The reason you see a bias is because history shows you can't get top line centers or forwards later in the draft but you can get good d-men later in the draft.

Bogosian and Schenn are two meat and potatoes guys not sure many would trade Erik Karlsson for them. Arguably who is better between them and Gardiner at this point. From that same draft not sure many are pleased in Buffalo and LA right now with meat and potatoes Myers and Teubert.

Had a couple beers with a friend who is an NHL scout(not Calgary) last week. He specifically mentioned Fleury as a guy he thought The Flames might pick if they ended up with the 5th. Said this time of year lots of chatter around the rink and guys get pretty good sense to where teams are leaning. His top 2 is VERY close but he likes Bennett-Reinhart in that order but said Tim Murray(Buffalo) covets Reinhart and was in cranbrook himself for game 6 vs the Hitmen. Feels Buffalo will pick Reinhart with the top pick assumming they hold that spot. No surprise but had Ekblad and Draisatl in his top 4. Anyways, interesting conversation thought I'd share in light of recent discussion regarding Fleury.

And if Fleury gets picked, snipe will come in here with "See I told you you guys all attacked me and said he wasn't a good defenceman and I told you he was definitely a top player like Pietrangelo or something but obviously not like Pietrangelo and I just can't believe how blind all of CP is because nobody believes me."

So, we'll have that to look forward to.

I have said my piece. all I want known is that he is a top prospect so don't be surprised if he's picked based on our team need and the fact I don't see the other prospects are that much more well rounded. We picked a two way guy last year in Monahan. And I think it worked out well. Fleury is a two way player, not a pure shutdown guy like gubranson or Schenn. His game is meat and potatoes, hitting and defence first. But he can still skate out of the zone, make a nice first pass and join the rush.

Kind of a crazy stat but since 1995 only 1 d-man taken with a top 10 pick went on to win a Stanley Cup with the team that drafted him.

In that same time frame 9 forwards won the cup with the team that drafted them (7 centers, 2 wingers).

^ With that being said, you build your team around drafting forwards. It's easier to sign a free agent defenseman, one that is already developed. Don't get me wrong, if Ekblad is in Burke's plan, of course we draft him. But if the BPA at #5 is a forward and not a defenseman, you take the forward.

But how many meat and potatoes did they regularly consume?

Tough to figure that out, but I am guessing somewhere between Karlsson and Big Buf.

Will this guy be available when we draft?

He's the best meat guy in the draft, but is his potato game at the nhl level?
