It is funny how worked up some Calgarians get over the city’s taxpayers sending more money to the federal government than they receive in services so Manitoba and New Brunswick can build schools and hospitals, but they don’t seem to have any problem sending more money to the provincial government than they receive in services in order to pay for schools and hospitals in Bonneyville and Stettler.

Of course, rural Albertans who complain about equalization are even bigger hypocrites, when they benefit so much from transfers from Alberta’s urban taxpayers.

Nothing he's saying is really unexpected from where I'm sitting.

How many pages ago was he saying he quite likes Sean Chu, prompting everyone to tell him how much of a piece of hot garbage Chu has been as a councillor, only to have him reply that he doesn't really follow civil politics? It does not shock me whatsoever to learn that the_only_turek_fan is completely out of touch with other municipal issues as well.

The percentage of tax to income is likely pretty similar, so they have the same incentive. Just because the total amount they pay is smaller doesn't mean they pay less.

It's so much worse than that, the person living the the $5m house probably has cash flow, and access to economic mechanisms that offset their cost of living. Even if both of them are paying say 4% of income into property tax, it probably costs the poor person much much more to pay that 4%, because the richer person has lower interest rates, or draws the payments from a savings account that has already accrued interest exceeding that 4% tax before they even need to spend the money.

The biggest disadvantage in the wealth gap people always fail to account for is time. As soon as you have the potential to decide how/when/where you money goes you are almost infinitely wealthier than a person who basically has their entire paycheque auto withdrawn the day it lands.
