- lots of admiration for Treliving
- never once thought about going to Ottawa. Scoffed at the idea
- Robert Thomas tried to recruit him to the Blues
- Parents place in Florida is over an hour from his place but great to be closer to them
- discussed his exit in Calgary and how he felt good about the way it went down
- mentioned dinner with Bennett last season where Sam gushed about the lifestyle and team
- mentioned a couple of chats with Sutter. Definitely got the impression there wasn’t a lot of love there but that is my interpretation
I recommend a listen if you have 35 minutes to spare

Thanks for positing this.
Most interesting part for me is that he mentions multiple times that it was like being a free agent and he chose where he wanted to go. He said there was a ton of false information out there.
Says it was fun getting to know a few teams and talking to them and then making his choice to go to Florida.

Yeah same here. I said it in the other thread about Sutter - Tkachuk just doesn't like talking about him at all.
His answer to the question about whether Darryl had called him after the trade was dodgy too.

Just guessing but I'd guess for how 'professional' the Tkachuk name seems to elude to, Matthew is still pretty immature and possibly entitled and whiny. Not characteristics Sutter would like. He would be a player that you would either love or hate with no middle ground.

Tkachuk always made me chuckle about a disagreement in coaching kids.
I coached my daughter for her 5 years in hockey. She started late and was right near the bottom of the group but loved it.
I always coached that if you're a winger and you don't have the time to get sight lines on a break out past put it on an angle with torque and it will get out 90% of the time, 5% ending up on your other winger's stick with an offensive opportunity.
Then other coaches would tell her to never do that when the 10% turnover happened.
Tkachuk did that often, and I loved it ... high percentage.
Way more turnovers when you make a kid (NHLer) eye up the perfect pass before making the play (in my opinion)

Randomly putting pieces together with the other podcast with Jon Stevens talking about Sutter.
Sutter is all about the team, if you're not helping the team, then what are you doing. If you make it about you, then you're going to have a bad time.
Rewind to the Muzzin incident. Perhaps in the eyes of the rest of the team, Tkachuk was being selfish in making the situation about him. In the eyes of Tkachuk he was in the guts of the game and not a single member of the group stood up for him.
Maybe that's a bit of a peek into the dynamics of the locker room, past and present. Tkachuks antics, while effective can also be selfish. Maybe the coach and team were getting a bit tired of it. Or maybe they just wanted him to be better at picking his spots.
I would argue that his career season was a direct result on him just focusing on playing hockey rather than being an antagonist, and also his return to his antics played a part in the loss to the Oilers. He didn't need to break his hand fighting Klingberg.
Don't get me wrong, loved Tkachuk during his time here, but maybe he thought he was a bit bigger than the team. Maybe under Sutter, that was a non negotiable item.

There is a reason why they are extinct people! They were playing and prancing when the great flood came and disappeared off the face of earth... sorta like Tkachuk in the playoffs.

Sutter had a lot of praise for Tkachuk as an elite talent in terms of his hands and his skills in front of the net, but I don't recall him ever talking up Tkachuk for his abilities to get under opposition skin or stir things up. It seems quite plausible to me that Tkachuk’s idea of how he should play the game and Sutter's idea of how he should play the game weren't fully aligned.

Tkachuk is always more effective when he's not trying to stir #### up.
This regular season 95% of the time he wasn't doing as much of the extra curriculars, and he had his most impactful season.
Once the playoffs started he tried to be "Intangible" Tkachuk again, and he wasn't nearly as effective and likely hurt himself.
I hope he goes to Florida now and tries to stir #### up all the time - because then he won't be as effective.

I felt like his pot stirring was often very satisfying in the moment, but long term it was a negative, especially when he tried too hard in a subsequent game. Laugh about his treatment of Doughty in one game - Doughty got the last laugh. Hell, even Kassian pretty much took Tkachuk out of his game in the game after the “incident”, albeit with a huge assist from the media.

Look. Tkachuk almost singlehandedly goaded the Oilers into giving Kaveman Zack Kassian $13.0 m. He is a god-damned hero for this product of sheer lunacy.

One thing that also stuck out to me was him saying he knows guys on the Bluejackets and that they seem more excited that Johnny is gonna be on their team than Johnny does being there

Not sure why you’re surprised by this? It’s no different than Flames players being excited that they landed Huberdeau. Players want to play with stars.

Jackets players and fans should all be excited. Johnny is a really special player. No doubt in my mind that the Blue Jackets are winners of the off-season so far. Adding Johnny at under $10M for 7 years without having to give anything up is a home run for them.

No. ummm they all drowned.
I have seen a lot of green alligators and long-necked geese
Not many humpty-back camels but just regular camels and some chimpanzees
Also some cats and rats and elephants
However if there really was a NHL unicorn it would be Little Johnny Goodrow. His hockey IQ is off the effing chart! too bad he is a dweeb and signed in Columbus!!! LOL
