I would hope that any actual real arena news would justify a new thread.

For the new thread title, I suggest:
"Flames to announce arena plans in the... past..."

- Canadian Tire Centre is a fantastic arena, with relatively easy highway access. After seeing a Sens game there two weeks ago I was amazed how much easier it was to get to and from the rink than 10 years ago
- There's no highway (so I'm told) that will allow mass traffic in and out of the downtown core easily. Meaning the infrastructre isn't there for a 18-20,000 seat arena (again so I'm told I don't actually know)
That said, I'd be ok with Ottawa getting a new rink downtown, as Kanata is way out there. On the other hand, friends of mine live near the rink in Kanata and their land values would likely drop, so yeah, sucks for them.

The CFL Stadium is right downtown and its near all the government buildings, Rideau Canal etc. They are building up light rail there as well. If everyone drove it might get a bit congested but there's a ton of people around there all day so they can easily handle it with a bit of congestion.

I wonder if Calgary could get away with the same? Depends on how the team is doing I guess, but on some nights, people can't give away 300 level seats. I know that a new rink alone will attract people. But I remember reading an article about how new stadiums only increase attendance for about two years before the luster wears off and then it all goes back to team performance.

I would guess there will be no season ticket price seats cheaper than the current orange saddledome price level in Calgary's new building.
Press Level seats are huge in number, and terrible in quality (rows 4+ that is). Our new nosebleeds will be of a much higher quality and refelcted in the price.

Woah, Landowne Park in Ottawa is not "right downtown."

Ticket prices will obviously go up, and probably more than we would like or think is reasonable. However, I don't think they will go up as much as Edmotnon. As Locke and others have said, Oilfans have shown they'll swallow as much kool-aid as they can and keep coming back for more. Flames fans have reacted more rationally to success and failure.
Also, I think Edmonton prices will eventually level off. They still have a two year cushion to milk the fans, I don't think they'll lose too much ticketwise until at least one year in the new building. Especially with what Oilfans have shown us. Though not as many as before, there are still a lot of people who want to keep their tickets for the opening of the new arena (the promise of McDavid, etc.). There is this highly irrational belief that if they just get through to event 'x' things will be ok and their loyalty will be rewarded. I bet some people even think that owning season tickets in the new arena is a smart investment.
Only when they still suck in the new arena will we see some rational behavior from the fans.

Of course King has nothing to add. I think he owes us a hint, at least, if this has anything to do with it.

City has long planned to acquire all the property here. Question will be whether the economics pencil out. Major environmental remediation and infrastructure will cost in the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS to prepare the land for redevelopment. Assuming that's CRL debt to finance, it will take a lot of high density development to be able to pay back that debt. Add a sports facility (which presumably will demand additional CRL money to finance its construction) and that takes away a lot of land to redevelop for other uses that contribute tax revenue, making the pro forma even more challenging. Might make more sense if you could get the Province to gift the portion to cover environmental remediation, but that doesn't seem likely, at least not for several years. I guess I have no problem stating this since my comments to this effect were quoted in the paper after the FOIP of Mayor's Office emails on the topic...
If this is a site they're pursuing, at very least I hope it's not the only one they're serious about looking at.

It's about to undergo a new study on how to upgrade it. Zero percent of any actual project is funded at this point.

Sounds like it would me a logistical nightmare to redevelop that area and the infrastructure around it.
But what a great location it would be...

There's no arena proposal on the table, so the acquisition of this land is entirely independent of a hypothetical idea of an arena here.

The City of Calgary would still own the land and will eventually realize a massive gain sometime later this century. Right now the land is useless and the infrastructure is a mess which is the city’s fault for poor plannig. I think it's a good use of 37 million.
Sunny downtown riverfront property should not remain environmentally damaged and held by car dealerships this day and age.

Entrepreneurs should start building pubs on 19th St NW, and further up on Kensington Road.
And Peace Bridge2 please.

Could Care Less

In all seriousness. What's with Ken King dangling the carrot for so long and giving specific timelines that a proposal will be released to the public, and then not releasing it? Why would he do this? Is it a ploy/PR, or does it keep hitting setbacks somehow internally? I don't really get it tbh.
I was talking to my season ticket rep about something else and I asked him bluntly about the arena, and he also gave me the impression that something was coming very, very soon. Like be on the edge of your seat kind of soon (he didn't actually say this). This was in November.
