Crowchild Trail Corridor Study
You would have to think that Flames would be involved with this if its going to be West Village.
This is might be crazy talk but I would say something is finally going to go down this spring.
|
I think this may be more of a coincidence, wasn't it early in 2014 that city council pretty much threw out all of the plans that the city came up with for that corridor and asked them to go back to the drawing board?
This is probably the result of that.

Summary:s lots of talk but no one has presented a proposal. Willing to discuss a proposal but says there is little support on using taxpayer funds.

Last week I was in attendance to a STH reception and Ken King said they were going to the city in February. Take it for what it is worth.

Forgive my ignorance in the matter, but what's the process for organizations/landholders in these situations?
Ie. Do the flames have a building designed/sketched for x amount of acres and just a matter of finding the right amount of land? Is it vice versa? A little of both?

This is a complicated one. Typically, concepts are made for a certain piece of property already owned; given what the Flames would like to do, you have to consider future purchases of currently un-owned land. You can do concepts and sketches, but at the end of the day, it's all conditional and could change at the drop of a dime if that land isn't able to be purchased.
However, creating concepts can help to gain client, municipal and public support for the project. That's why you bring forward big ideas now in order to get the right parties and decision-makers on your side.

All I've got to say is they better build it downtownish or it will be a big mistake. The Sens are already looking at a downtown arena.

That Crowchild Study link indicates that the expected date for the end of the study-period is 2016. If construction of a new rink in the west village is contingent upon expansion of Crowchild, which makes a hell of a lot of sense, then I think we're talking about seeing drawings that have a better than 50% chance of being close to what gets built sometime in 2017, with a likely move-in date for the Flames around 2020. I suggest the moderators lock this thread.

It may be obvious but it isn't a slam dunk. As far as I know the only place that the Flames have a financial interest in is Firepark.

There are a few issues surrounding the Sens "looking" downtown.
- The federal government basically asked them to look at it, as the government wants to develop the LeBreton Flats
- The Canadian Tire Centre just had a huge renovation (LED lighting, new screens throughout, new powerring, etc)
- Canadian Tire Centre is a fantastic arena, with relatively easy highway access. After seeing a Sens game there two weeks ago I was amazed how much easier it was to get to and from the rink than 10 years ago
- There's no highway (so I'm told) that will allow mass traffic in and out of the downtown core easily. Meaning the infrastructre isn't there for a 18-20,000 seat arena (again so I'm told I don't actually know)
That said, I'd be ok with Ottawa getting a new rink downtown, as Kanata is way out there. On the other hand, friends of mine live near the rink in Kanata and their land values would likely drop, so yeah, sucks for them.

With respect to point 4, I'm pretty sure much more than 20,000 work in the downtown area of Ottawa and commute to work every day of the week so I don't think getting out of downtown after an evening game would be a concern.

The Ottawa arena is right off the Trans-Canada, IIRC from 20 years ago when I worked in Ottawa. And that highway goes up to (but not into) downtown.
Downtown in Ottawa is a government core, not really a business core like Calgary, and it becomes really dead from 5:00 onward.
The trouble isn't really the access IMO, it's the length of the drive. It's quite far even from central Ottawa. So rsidents on the south and east side face probably an hour's worth of travel to get there.

Ugh...
So I was talking to an Edmonton/Oilers supporter the other day and he was commenting on how the new arena was looking and how that area would be really beautiful once the hotel was up and the area was finished and I agreed, it's looks like it's going to be a nice arena (jokes aside) and that it will really help revitalize the area and downtown.
In my opinion, it's about time they did something like that, having the arena where it is was bad for both the arena and downtown. Another reason why I don't want to see any new Calgary arena not DT or very very close. Id' really like the Stampede board and Flames to stop fighting, but that's another rant...
ANYWAY... despite my politeness and maturity in not jumping into a Cal v Edm debate he continues by saying that the Flames AND Calgary are really in trouble. Where's our new arena? I said simply it's coming, there's no reason why Edmotnon would get one and we don't. Responds by, 'You don't have a Katz to build one for you'. In my head I'm thinking, 'Yeah! Thank God!' but I simply reply that I'm pretty sure the ownership group we have has just as much, if not more money, and have always proven to be pro Flames and pro Calgary in the past. I try to get into 'most of that money comes from the province and city anyway, and since Edmonton got it...' but he just keeps going. He talks about how Bettman was in town cause we need his help to seal the deal, and how the ownership group will probably move the team if we don't get an arena (cause the NHL has so many other options, even if Calgary wasn't one of the profitable ones?) and how Edmonton's downtown core will be more vibrant than Calgary's in 5-10 years. At this point I can't even quote facts and figures anymore he's so far off the rails. IE, even if Calgary's growth drops off dramatically and Edmotnon's stays high, it would take them longer than 10 years to catch up.
Is this really what it's come to in Edmonton? It's not even the first overall draft picks anymore. It's crept into their thoughts of the business and city planning. The whole 'promise of tomorrow' is so engrained in these kool-aid drinkers that they don't even see logic, reason, or fact anymore.
This is an intelligent man in his 40's too. Not some young punk or barfly puffing out his chest. I woulda understood that. It really is a sickness up there. Or maybe the inferiority complex we were accused of in the 70's/80's is firmly in their court now?
Anyway, just sharing. Thought a few might get a kick out of the story. Think I'll post it in the E=NG thread too. They really are delusional up there.

Ken King has made it very clear at several season ticket events over the last several years that the area will be downtown.
