Shayna is legit. Probably more legit than anyone. She absolutely owned the trade deadline a couple of years ago.

I think so too. I can't see a 35 year old goalie with 2 years left on a pretty high AAV getting that much.

Or no retention and they send Kotkaniemi our way, and a pick, as the rumor was they might buy him out.

Markstrom at 100% has the 7th highest cap hit among goalies, which includes Carey Price.
Three goalies have a cap hit between $6-6.5M, Markstrom is better/more desirable than either Binnington or Gibson.
There are 12 goalies within $1M of his $6M cap hit, and a lot of them are ####ing terrible.
All this is to say, concerns about Marky’s cap hit are overblown.
Retention has already been established as an option for the right return.
Markstrom will return something we like. It’s not gonna be a 2nd and conditional 7th.

Kotkaniemi is a very negative trade asset.
Why would they touch him?

Conversation from the other day. Friedman suggested the Canes might buy him out. I figured he fits what Conroy is looking for in a player needing a change of scenery etc. Carolina would likely prefer to not buy him out but move him entirely.

23 year old centre who’s been in the NHL everyday since he was 18.
His numbers compare favorably to Backlund at the same age - he’s actually more accomplished than Backs at the same age.
For a guy signed long term to a contract that’s easy to buy out, it’s worth looking at.

To be clear he wondered if the Canes would buy him out.
He didn't have any insight that suggested they are actually considering it.

Kotkaniemi starts the majority of his shifts in the offensive zone. Backlund does not. And didn't at Kotkaniemi's age either.
The only reason Kotkaniemi even gets the points he has is because he is given all of the high ground he possibly can.
His underlying numbers are good, but they should be when you start a significant majority of your shifts in the offensive zone again middle 6ers.
Backlund starts the majority of his shifts in the D zone against the top 6. And has for his entire career.

If the Canes were going to buy him out Conroy should be on the phone to take him at 50% retained instead. Yes they hold 2.4 million instead of 835k according to capfriendly, but for a way shorter amount of time

That's how he talks though. He doesn't just give out information like a normal person, he wonders if this is something someone will do. He doesn't wonder unless he has some intel.

Kotkaniemi is an imperfect player - if he weren’t, Carolina wouldn’t consider trading him for goaltending help.
It’s the sort of return (with accompanying draft capital) that Calgary would probably find quite appealing.

That's true. I guess I am just not a fan. But I wouldn't be totally upset if he was salary dumped with a pick to the Flames!

Marco Rossi is getting traded this offseason most likely, wonder what the ask would be?
I think trading him for Vancouvers first could make sense since he is only 22 and is a proven 2C probably at least going forward

The ask would be the Flames first round pick, 9th overall.
