Selfishly, I'm hoping that the Stampede clean-up helps benefit my neighbourhood indirectly. I couldn't believe what I saw yesterday.

Some bridges such as that (if the actual structure is sound), will have approaches temporarily put in, so that the bridge can be used, and then perhaps have more permanent fixes happen later. They can probably have that open for Stampede as well, provided that the bridge foundations and girders themselves are fine.

OK, apparently the COC Manchester yard has enough sand to re-do the track. It's all going in the next 24hrs

Keep in mind this is all industry rumour mill.

Adding to the problem is that Lafarge is the primary contractor on the ring road, who as far as I know is still not running their Deerfoot plant. They have huge penalties in place if they can't meet deadlines, so my guess is they will buying up all their aggregate from producers anywhere near the city. This will limit the availability, unless you want to truck it in from somewhere else ($$$$).

It's an interesting problem for sure.

What about the oil-sands projects? I would assume there is a significant amount of base construction materials on various sites waiting?

Obviously $$$$, but, there's gotta be some resources in Alberta that could spare/re-sell it.

CP has their own problems at the moment - the transcontinental mainline through Canmore was obliterated and secondary lines through southern AB and BC took a hit as well. That said, CP has always been a good corporate citizen being based in Calgary and I'm sure they would answer the call if the city requested help.

As catastrophic as they look, it's actually amazing how quickly washouts like this can be fixed. Once the city commits the resources to it, I would bet that section of track is restored within 48 hours or less. The bigger concern is the signalling equipment that controls traffic on the C-Train line, and the electrical bonds that control the gates at the grade crossings - I would imagine a lot of that stuff is a total loss and depending how severe the damage is it could be a while before they get it all replaced.

Well if they cannot get the trains operational by the start of Stampede there really is no point at all to having it. Last thing the city needs is 10-20 times the usually car traffic of people trying to go to Stampede. Or more likely, very few people will actually go to Stampede.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing, they could have a bus system setup from a working train station to the Stampede grounds (assuming they have or can secure enough extra buses).

Our sites are 650km away, it would be completely unfeasible. Each truck would take 2 days to haul one load there and back. $400 in fuel each direction, plus the cost of the truck and driver. We typically don't have a bunch of material stockpiled, we prefer on time delivery if possible.

Contemplating taking the next couple of weeks off to come back to lend a hand.

I honestly wouldn't doubt it, as the Manchester yard is the base of operations for all the curb/gutter/road work the CoC does.

There are enough agg producers around Calgary to cover it if need be. Off the top of my head there are 10 either in Calgary or within 30 minutes, who all produce around 1 000 000 ton of various products per year. If they pull from one stockpile they can realistically replace it fairly quickly if need be. No one has been running 24/7 but I have a feeling that's going to change.
