I had just been saying that I am sure Potter is highly regarded by hockey insiders because of his parentage, but less so by the sports media or the general public, who mostly don't follow hockey outside the NHL. Does that make it clearer why I expressed that the way I did?

Has the son of a Women's Hockey Olympian ever made it to the NHL?

Women's hockey has been in the Olympics for almost 30 years, so you'd think it would have happened at some point already.

I was going to say Cammi Granato, but apparently Landon Ferraro is her adopted son.

Ovechkin's mother won 2 Olympic gold medals in women's basketball.

Ellen Weinberg-Hughes likely would have been an Olympian but retired before Nagano when Women's Hockey was first introduced as an Olympic sport. She was an all-star for the 1992 USA Women's World Championship team.

So the Potters might be the first to do so, which is pretty cool.

Maybe better served for another thread but any other feedback on camp or even himself from tacojr?

He thought it was a really good format. Far more personal and interactive with the other players and the staff just because of the smaller size. Spoke very highly of the rest of the guys. He shared a room with Basha which is interesting to put the two Calgary guys together. I would have thought that they'd use those two as salesmen to market our city to the Americans and easterners in the group!

Carter did really well on the fitness scores as expected given the training that he's had at Denver over the last four years and given that he's older than a lot of the guys. All in all, a great experience. Workouts with the Flames regulars started yesterday. Two and a half hours of training followed by optional ice four days a week. Intense!

I posted this elsewhere, but it makes more sense here. Pretty wicked to see him slotted amongst these players.

Interesting thing I noticed reading the Dobber ranking (fantasy hockey rankings) of the Top 300 keeper league skaters. Here is the entire list of new additions from the last draft (Shabanov being an exception):

165 Maxim Shabanov
220 Michael Misa
231 Matthew Schaefer
269 James Hagens
289 Porter Martone
293 Caleb Desnoyers
300 Roger McQueen
310 Jake O’Brien
329 Victor Eklund
330 Lynden Lakovic
348 Cullen Potter
354 Benjamin Kindel
379 Jamie Sourdif
482 Anton Frondell
503 Brady Martin

Yeah neat for potter- interesting he and kindel over reschhy

I’m confused on Sourdif - I think I was thinking of the wrong guy but…

Ok that is the Sourdif I was thinking of- seems Dobber is high on him- I guess I need to better understand how his age and productivity differs from the Kerins/Stromgren tier

Sourdif is likely in the lineup this year, I think that’s about the main reason.

was taking a bit of a closer look at Potter, gaining an appreciation for just how young he was last season compared to his peers

the next YOUNGEST guy on his team is OLDER than Logan Cooley

and one guy on his team is older than Farrabee , Bahl, Pospisil etc

Potter could be an incredible steal, look at Hagens, same size, slightly older, slower skater, weaker goal scorer, but played on a juggernaut college team and was one of the top prospects, drop Potter on that team and I doubt he lasts to #32.

I dont think your wrong.

The fact that Potter is basically a teen playing center against mostly young adults is impressive.

Even at his age, he drives play through transition, and from what I’ve read- he was an advanced stats darling.

Few numbers on Cullen Potter:

-Potter was 1st in the NCAA for scoring by a U-18 player (his birthday is Jan.10th) in 2024-25, with 13 goals and 22 points in 35 games (0.63 ppg). The next highest was Sascha Boumedienne, with 13 points (0.33 ppg), then Will Horcoff with 10 points (0.56 ppg).
-Potter's 22 points are tied for 43rd all-time by a U-18 player in the NCAA.
-Potter's 0.63 ppg is tied for 52nd all-time by a u-18 player.
-Potter's 13 goals are tied with Mike Cammalleri for 23rd all-time by a U-18 player in the NCAA.

The more I learn about this prospect, the more I think teams must have really over-compensated for the Panthers’ cup wins. Teams are really prioritizing larger players over skilled players.

There’s just a ton of potential in this player. Hope he has a solid D+1 year.

Billy Beane to the contrary, they really are selling jeans here. Size has always been overvalued in the early rounds of the draft – at least since I began following the draft in the 1980s.

I guess at the end of the day, a larger player is more likely to find a role on the NHL team if they don't turn out to be productive offensively at the NHL level
