What would I do without my TSN,Sportsnet and The Score hockey coverage?
It's pretty funny to watch Condelleza Rice beat around the bush on TV, she's getting all these questions about the Black Caucus and she's agreeing with what they're saying in her head, but what comes out of her mouth is a different story...........

Stealing electronics because you can is wrong. No doubt about it. What I want to know though, is who really cares about TVs? The whole city is ruined. Thousands of people are dying.
This stealing of televisions/clothes/booze is getting more exposure and seems to cause more outrage than other, rather more important things like death, pestilence, murder, inept government at all levels...
What's a few tvs here and there? The whole town is going to be torn down.
Again, I think it is wrong, but looting of (probably doomed) consumer goods should be way down the list of things for anyone to gripe about but it seems to be up at the top. I must have seen that footage of those 3 people carrying armloads of t-shirts out the window about a hundred times. I haven't seen a dead body or one of those roving gangs or a robbery or even footage from inside the Superdome though. What is the real story here?
How this lawlessness was able to come about and remain for so long is a much bigger and far-reaching issue than looted stores

I never condemed stealing electronics, my point was that it is an extremely minor thing to worry about in the grand scheme of things going on, and if Joe Blow want's to jack a TV he's not going to be able to use anyways, who cares?

I think we aren't seeing a lot of that stuff because a) the media feels it is too graphic to show (whether right or wrong) and b) because the media is too afraid to get near some of the real violence.

Now I'm certainly not one to mess with Texas, but 23 million people live there and they can't find room for 20 thousand "refugees" from their own country? I don't get it. I thought they were "good Christian people" down there but I don't see much good Christian behavior.
Maybe I'm missing it and maybe they just aren't reporting it, but you'd think there would be some sort of effort to bring of these stranded people into homes and churches instead of having thousands and thousands of people living like dogs in the old baseball stadium.
|
There's a huge effort to bring the stranded people to shelters. It's almost logistically impossible to escort every single person at the exact same time to where they need to be. NOLA is flooded like crazy, people keep popping out of nowhere onto the streets and rooftops that need help, you've got idiots looting the streets and shooting at people for no reason. There's rapes and murders taking place in the middle of the street. You've got sick people who need medical attention and there's no power. Thousands of people need evacuating from the Superdome, and there's only a certain amount of buses that can come at a time with all the flooding, it's not like they can get buses in from all directions. This is just a nightmare beyong proportions, and it's easy to say from afar how Bush et al aren't doing a good enough job, which I agree with, but it's total chaos down there and alot more difficult when you don't have proper ways of communication with no power.
And about finding room for people in Texas, Florida, or wherever else. This isn't just a one or two day shelter. These cities that are recieving upwards of thousands of people need to know what to do with them. Most of these people are poor and live on weekly paychecks. Houston is taking on a huge risk with all these people coming. Not that they shouldn't be, they absolutely should. But as these people get more desperate, you know these problems are going to spread to Houston as well. I know for a fact that there aren't 20,000+ job openings there, and major problems will arise. You can't expect people to live in the Astrodome for 3+ months, maybe even a year.
I'm not ragging on your post, this is just general comments that I wanted to get off my chest.
I pray for everyone whose in the situation they are in down there, and hope everything can be restored back to normal as soon as possible. What that FEMA worker posted on another forum is just remarkable, and the people who are shooting, raping, murdering and taking advantage of the situation at a time like this are the scum of the earth, and should be taken out on the spot.

Anyone else see what they did with the prisoners in the jail that was flooded?
Apparently, they took some of them to a section of the freeway that was surrounded by water, and dropped them off, and surrounded them with guards. They are essentially on an island. good stuff. Others are still in the courtyard, which is flooded to within a couple feet of the barbwire on top of the fence, and are holding on to the barbwire for dear life. I think it's kind of funny, (in a twisted way.) You know they are on the end of the list to be rescued, and some of them may drown if they can't hold on long enough.

Good to hear. I do sincerely hope that no one knows anyone who has been seriously affected by this. We can all gain and lose possession, but our lives and our hope for the future need to stay intact.
In other good news, the French QUarter and Jackson square came out relatively unscathed, and are not facing flooding, so there will still be tourism to New Orleans when the rest of the city gets cleaned up. I'm certain many people will go just to see the damage.

Found a great site for photos.
www.nola.com/hurricane/photos
Some interesting pictures and stories to say the least. It is good to have more than CNN covering it. I am curious why no other police people have relieved or helped the NOPD. Than again maybe they have and CNN says nothing about it.

Dont know where you are getting your information Rouge, but Texas is accepting well over 100,000 folks from NO and area.
That is a MAJOR burden on existing infrastructure in that state. The kids are going to be allowed to attend school without any proof of residency, (as they should), the Texas legislature is meeting next week on how to get folks out of the shelters and into homes/hotels/apartments so they DONT have to stay in the shelters.
In addition, neighboring states from New mexico to right here in NC, up to Pennsylvania are all willing to absorb the displaced from the Gulf Coast. You need to get off the whole "it aint very Christian sounding" BS man. No one is denying that things started slow, and there will be a very thorough investigation as to why and what happened no doubt, but to start pointing fingers at Texans is ludicrous at this point. Its a mere 130 hours since Katarina made landfall and even less time since the levees in NO broke. The scale of this thing is beyond those that aren't there....so i think many should take a step back and realize that this kind of disaster has never seen a magnitude like the current one in the history of the US. Maybe even NA.
Just yesterday i spent 4 hours or so at the local Red Cross helping them load bins for shipment to the area. There were about 20 of us and what we accomplished in that time would be enough for 100 people to be sustained for a week or so by my estimates. Now do the math and add what would need to be done for 500,000 for 3-6 months! Its absolutely overwhelming.
And a sidenote..
After my time at the RC yesterday i stopped at the local watering hole to grab a cold one and a bite to eat. Sitting at the bar was a woman from NO who has a place up here in the Mtns that she was fortunate to have been at when Katrina struck. She has lost two homes, several businesses, has no idea where many many friends are and her biggest concern was what she could do to make some of the displaced more comfortable. (Clearly she was a very wealthy woman as she was riding in her limo and had a driver with her). I think she was leaning towards getting the RC to grab a family of 4 or so and flying them up here and paying their way until they can get back to NO or where ever they decide to settle again. That was just amazing to me. She has a home up north somewhere as well and was willing to just go stay there until this thing plays out.
I implore EVERYONE at CP to go to the Red Cross today or call or go to their website www.redcross.org and donate 5 bucks, 20 bucks, blood, your time....whatever you can...and everyone CAN donate something. It will truly make a difference in someones life.
And whoever the hell is criticizing Bush for not being there the following day....get a grip. The place was not safe nor even stable, there was literally no where particularly close he could of landed ( they had to clean up the Mobile airport as well) and he would of been in the way more than anything else...taking up security resources that were already dreadfully thin...etc etc.
Im not defending bush by saying this...as it would of been no different no matter who was in office...the scope and magnitude of this thing was what no one expected. The Mississippi coast line is forever changed...period. There are likely as many folks in MS and AL combined that are homeless now as in NO. Its a freakin catastrophe of epic proportions for the USA. Instead of armchair QB'ing and pounding your chests about how evil the President is....help out. The folks down there both need it and deserve it.
Off my soapbox now.
Anyhow....I just think the time for finger pointing and Bush bashing over this thing...aint right now. There is just so much that was/is unknown by most.
