Though Glenncross/Stajan/Stempniak is our best & most experienced line, in reality it is a great 3rd line. Taking into account their skill sets, I am sure that line will be out against the opposition's top lines to shut them down in all situations.

Why do I bring this up? Because the other line combinations are more than likely going to get rolled out against weaker opposition & should have some room to express themselves, including the 4th line.

Having Colborne on a line with Galiardi as the ’4th line' with a crash-'n-bang winger like McGrattan or Bouma is actually as good an option as having him in the 'top 6’. With the forwards we have I think Hartley would be wise to roll 4 lines with relatively equal icetime.

Oh and i remembered one thing: When was the last time we made a trade with the Leafs where we were labeled the winners right off the bat?

I'd go ahead and put some money on that 4th round pick winning the Art Ross in a couple of years.

We'll beat ourselves up for not only trading the 4th round pick, but passing up on said Art Ross winner 3 times before he fell to the Leafs

For those who are worried about pushing Backlund to the wing, remember that he had his breakout season as a pro last year in Sweden playing as Berglund's winger.

It might work out okay.

I know Backlund has his share of injury issues in the past and I am not sure if I would quite call him injury prone. I think maybe being on the wing could suit his playing style better if he really wants to step up like he was towards the end of last year. Looked like he was being more agrressive and could maybe slip up the wing easier with his moves.

Pros:
Size
Offensive upside
Speed
Hockey IQ

Cons:
Needs to pass through waivers
Rumored intensity issues

I am not happy that he may end up beating out guys like Horak and Knight without deserving it, but at the same time it is arguable how 'ahead' or 'behind' these three are as compared to each other.

Flames are in a rebuild, and it is all about young talent acquisition for the future. Hometown kid who has size and speed (never heard him compared to Wheeler, but sounds a lot like him).

Because he was no longer waiver eligible, he was had for the cheap price of a 4th. Provides the Flames some options now and also down the line. Horak and Knight just have to work harder to show the Flames that this was a mistake, that's all.

At the end of the day, the Flames are more than likely better off having acquired Colborne than not, fits in with what the Flames are trying to accomplish in their rebuild (skill, size, age, speed, hockey IQ). The ONLY drawback is the waiver-eligible status, but that is also a plus since there would be no way he would be a Flame today if he wasn't waiver eligible.

Leafs were obviously shopping him, and he probably wouldn't have ever hit waivers for the Flames to put in a claim for him. You would have to think that the Oilers would have been trying to land him as well given their size and lack of depth up the middle. Flames have added 2 young centers who are both great at faceoffs and who have size while the Oilers added zero. Nice

Sounds like the kid has heart. Played through an injury last year and put up with some negative press too.

Here's the most in-depth analysis I can find about the player (albeit from a Leafs fan perspective) http://theleafsnation.com/2012/12/4/c-c-c-colborne

Looks like we'll be getting one of 2 versions of Colborne: the scoring machine who crashes the net & gets dirty goals or the perimeter playmaker who is less effective. There is a lot of speculation that his wrist injury hampered his high-impact net-crashing style of play, but now that he's recovered from his surgery we can hope that we've acquired a potential 2nd line C.

Flames Roster page had Colborne's number as blank until a few minutes ago.
http://flames.nhl.com/club/roster.htm

Looks like Joe will wear #8

Continues the legacy of:
Lew Morrison, Buster Harvey, Dave Kryskow, Dave Shand, Pat Ribbie, Bert Wilson, Kari Eloranta, Doug Risebrough, Dave Reierson, Trent Yawney, Sami Helenius, Mike Peluso, Valeri Bure, Petr Buzek, Anders Eriksson, Staffan Kronwall, Brendan Morrison, Krys Kolanos

I hope they're wrong, but they're apparently happy to get anything for him at this point. Two NHL teams have given up on him already, maybe this is the wake up call he needs.

I agree with those who think Burke had a hand in this, Burke usually has a good eye for talent. Hope he's right about Colbourne.
Unfortunately this reputation has dogged Colbourne for years. He has all of the physical skills that make scouts drool but comes up lacking the heart and desire department. Perhaps this move will be a fresh start. Either way, probably a good move by Burke and Co. Players mature at different times, you guys might get him at the right time.

Not sure what to make of a 6' 5" center that doesn't play with his size first. That said, he could be a great body to throw in front of the net on our non-existent powerplay.

Doesn't hurt that we have a few guys that can play center or wing. Makes it a lot easier should we have injuries as well.

With the waiver of Street and B. Jones, as their expected assignment, the Flames will be down to 13 forwards by my count. Assuming everyone is healthy:

Glencross-Stajan-Cammalleri
Baertschi-Backlund-Hudler
Galiardi-Monahan-D. Jones
Bouma-Colborne-Jackman/McGrattan

Depending on how well Stajan plays, you could quickly see the order changed to Backlund, Monahan, Stajan, Colborne.

You're missing Horak and Stempniak.

Horak and Stempniak are missing. Horak might be intentional and you're assuming he's re-assigned but Stempniak should be there.

Edit: Oh beat to it.
