Joe Nieuwendyk was GM. Shanny might be coming in as President. Those are not the same 2 roles.
I will say that it will be imperative that Shanny hires the right GM.

So is dowbiggin saying that this is a done deal? The hot stove made it sound like Shanny is doing his due diligence and picking whats best for him. It did not come across like Shanny had said yes to the flames.

To be fair. Dowbiggin broke this thing. Meaning he is more likely on an inside track on this thing.

I guess one has to wonder if Shanahan comes in will he have the freedom to clean house if he feels it's needed? Still some good coaches out there.

I hope if Shanahan is hired, he reports directly to the owners and not to King. Reporting to King would defeat the purpose of moving him on.

Really seems like an odd time to do this as the best coach available already has found work and with final draft preparations already done.
Then again if Edwards wanted Shanahan all along this was the only way to do it as nothing can be made official until after the finals are over.
One really hopes Shanahan will do an exhaustive search for a GM and not just hire a buddy, but unfortunately with a draft and free agency in 2-3 weeks you want your new GM to be able to put his stamp on the team then so there's not much time to get this all in place.
Time for everybody to hold their breath. There's a lot of moving parts here but the Flames NEED this to all work out somehow.

Part of me wonders if this talk of bringing Shanny in has something to do with an investigation on the O'Reilly offer sheet. It was speculated by some that Feaster threw the offer sheet to O'Reilly with the understanding that the Avs would match and this was a favor to his old friend Lacroix. If true, can't see this kind of scenario sitting well with Edwards or King.

Had an idea!

Doughboy has a point.
But I don't think it is correct. Shanahan is without even starting ahead of most people because of previous experience.

Any contract of that size would need to be signed off by King/Edwards first. If Feaster went behind their back, he would have had his walking papers after the season ended.

Niewendyk had executive experience with the Panthers, Leafs, and Team Canada. Shanahan doesn't have any more experience than that - in fact, he has no experience in the front office of an NHL team. In both cases, you're looking at a well-regarded former player with a few years of experience in minor executive roles taking a big leap to President or GM.

Well one thing with Shanahan to me is that he has always been a guy who thought beyond his own job as a player in his playing days. He was on the competition committee, held his own summitt back in the 04 lockout on how to improve the game. At the least he's from outside the organization, and has been involved in winning at the NHL level. I think he would be a guy who could stand up to his owner if he felt he was meddling too much.
The Flames are not the most appealing job in the league these days. So the established people have other options. As a result they need to find the people who can become the next high level executives. At the least I think Shanahan could make a positive impact on the culture of the team.

I fully agree. I would also add that it would be nice to have someone in the higher ups with actual hockey playing experience. As of right now, in order of chain in command, the first guy with any pro hockey playing experience is Weisbrod and he had a limmited pro hockey career. He is 4th in the chain of command . I will repeat, "he is 4th in the chain of command". We have Edwards, KK, Feaster all with no playing experience before him. That is sad.

When it comes to GM positions and coaching jobs, etc, I don't think the Flames are undesirable at all. Money wise they likely pay better, it's a hockey market, stable ownership, and a nice city to live in. Remember, unlike with players, there's always way more candidates than positions.

Flames may pay better than some, but I doubt there's much of a difference between franchises.
Hockey market is both a plus and a minus. Chances of getting turfed because of public impatience is much higher here than in a city where hockey has a lower profile, not to mention your kids getting bugged at school, etc.
As for the city, Calgary is nice for a mid/large Canadian city. But almost all other NHL cities have a much better climate, and most have better amenities for rich people and their families. You don't see affluent, successful people retire or vacation here. And most of the rich leave as soon as they've made their bucks.
Calgary is probably in the bottom third in the NHL in desirability for executives and players (and their families).

But this isn't just the world, it's the hockey world. These are hockey guys who are competitive and cocky. Every one of them likely wants the prestige attached to turning around a franchise, especially a Canadian one.

Sorry, couldn't let this pass. How do you figure that Calgary, which consistently ranks as one of the most livable cities in the world year after year, is less desirable to live and work in than at least 21 other NHL cities? I could probably name only 3-5 cities that have an NHL team that in my opinion would be more desirable to both love and work and be able to comfortable raise a family in.
