The long and short of this is, if the expectation is Gardiner +, then you will end up taking the view that Toronto won the deal as they won't give up that much. I am sure a lot of Canuck fans are being optimistic and assuming as much as well - they'll be disappointed.
I would hope that wasn't the return. All I know is this, if my GM was fired because he refused to trade a package for Luongo and the ownership did, and the new GM went and traded Kadri and Gardiner for Luongo and his awful contract I couldn't even imagine how mad and depressed I'd be.

We may hear rumours about our ownership meddling, but if we had straight up proof that they're meddling to horrible result like the Leafs fans might be about to recieve, how horrible would that be? Bad coaches and players are one thing, but when it's ownership, that breaks your will as a fan.

He will get them into the playoffs, which is all they want right now and his cap hit is only 5 mill odd year, for Toronto that is nothing.

couple that to the buyout making Luongo more of a possibility for more teams and Nonis may have to do something rash.

Why does every thread have to have Stajan & Jbo mentioned in it.

We get it guys you don't think they are good at hockey.

I guess being a "senior advisor" doesn't get you a hot dog stand.

Today was potentially the funniest day in hockey headline history. Let's recap:
-new CBA is finally ratified by BoG, headline quickly buried by:
-Burke fired
-Seguin apparently lives like an reject from "Hoarders"
-Babcock begs Lidstrom to return and is rejected
-Various increasingly sky-high Leafs-Lou trades rumoured
-Freaking *Flyers* are rumoured to be interested in Lou
-Bettman "apologizes" for the lockout

See, aren't you glad hockey is back so we can read this. I am stunned that nobody has started a trade thread about Jarmoe yet......

I seriously think that Burke will be Bettmans replacement and that is part of the reason for his "firing". Time will tell...

By the sounds of things at the press conference today, I don't think Bettman is going anywhere for a while.

Yup...for a few reasons.

1) If the league wanted to let him go, they would owe him 35 million bucks.

2) Bettman will not retire until after the NHL Centennial. He wants to over see that year. (The same year his deal runs out)

3) He has 100% support from the BoG at this point and although not every team is happy with the new deal, there was not a deal out there that would have accomplished that.

No chance Burke will be Bettman's replacement. Bettman had actual corporate law experience and was born to be a commissioner. Burke while a good GM (IMO), isn't anywhere near as smart as Gary is, though he's a lawyer himself.

Another thing that was bothering me watching TSN's coverage this afternoon, was how much of an asskiss Dreger was on live TV. He was putting down Burke's work and saying basically how good of a signing Nonis was. It was almost like he was pushing to a) get on Nonis' good side, and b) suck up to Rogers/Bell so that he wouldn't lose his job if he talked out of line. What a buttkiss job that was.

Don't forget Ian White who we moved for TKO and Babs. Carolina held him for 3 mths then flipped him for a 2nd from SJ. If only we would have held on a few months and got the second for White, we may have been able to draft someone to salvage the Phaneuf deal instead of picking up a couple of journeymen

The flames aren't interested in accumulating draft picks.

This screams of being fired for antisocial behavior in the workplace. Why else would he be fired at the worst time to fire an executive? He's already been allowed to run the team through the time when GMs have the most influence. Now it's mostly seeing if he was right in his moves. In other words, you've already invested all your money in an asset (the GM) so why cut your losses before you know the outcome of the investment?

you think the NHL commissioner is unpopular now, I can't even imagine how much people would learn to hate Burke in that role. Gary can be pissy, snarky and truth massaging at his worst, but Burke does in-your-face blowhard better than anyone else, except for maybe Cherry. The difference is I think Cherry believes every single word he yells, while Burke seems disingenuous a great deal of the time.

that and the role of commish requires a skill set that is beyond what Burke has, as others have said. Bettman for all his faults will probably finally get the credit he deserves someday after he steps down and one of his successors is unable to shoulder the same load.

Remember when we could have had Thornton but Sutter wouldn't throw Reggie in and kept trying to include Leopold? That would have solved the 1st line C debate for once and all. Bit of a parallel here as TO desperately needs a solid G to go anywhere and would probably miss the playoffs this year if this is not addressed.

Gardiner will be a good player but if that is what is holding TO back from acquiring a top 10 goalie and getting into the playoffs, then Burke deserved to be fired for not improving his team's weakest position.

Don't remember that. Not saying it didn't happen, but I never heard about it. What else were the Flames offering?
