The problem is the technical can always trump the protocol. In this case, the six-second rule was enacted, and I'm sure Canada knew it could have been a possibility, even if it was slight.
Sure we can argue there was robbery (and I believe there was), but rules are rules - not much to do from this point but win bronze and don't tempt the six-second rule a second time.

Not familiar with the women's game.. But I do watch a ton of soccer and the number of times I've ever seen that 6 second rule (never) called makes me question the integrity of the refereeing.

You know this.
In a men's World Cup, or Premier League if a ref did that he would be dead. He really would be.
One thing people forget about the Olympics is that is still amateurish. Everything from the officials, to the 15-year old time keeper to the volunteers. This is just another one of those stories.

Yep, and what made it even worse was then calling that penalty an intentional handball immediately afterwards. Almost but not quite as bad as the initial call.
Really sketchy, especially with the world number 1s losing with 10 or 15 to go. Sad to see a legendary performance by Sinclair wasted.

nah in the end, it's women's football. Nobody will care tomorrow, it doesn't matter.
It's not like a Game 6, 8 years ago that people are still mad about because IT MATTERS!

I saw it called once in the EPL, but even there the ref showed a yellow card and then still let the keeper kick the ball away. Mind you, this was years ago

That happens alot on goal kicks. Almost every weekend.
Holding the ball is different.

Biggest rival in what? Women's soccer? Well Canada might see the US as their biggest, but the US doesn't see it the other way around. Regardless, if Canada won I would have been rooting for our neighbor's to the north, just like I root for Mexico against anyone who isn't the US in men's.

Same. But beside that, if you are going to call Canada on the handball in the box like that, why did you overlook the exact same thing happening in the American box not ten minutes before?
Also...
cathalkelly @cathalkelly
GK Erin McLeod says she received no warning on time wasting. Even American coach Pia Sundhage said afterward, "I've never seen that before."

That's what it comes down to for me.
I could actually care less who Canada played today. Japan, France, USA, aliens from Mars. Whoever and whatever.
At least people who didn't know who she is will now. I wanted her to carry the flag at the Opening Ceremony and while I can't argue the choice of Whitfield, this opens up the flag for her at the Closing Ceremony. Unless something amazing happens down the stretch here, she deserves it.
Sinclair is a very special player. She absolutely gives it her all and is just a wicked role model. I've never seen her take a game off and her leadership is fantastic. Above all of that, she has surreal skills. Herdman uses her well and he knows he can basically count of her for anything. She's such a good ambassador for the sport.
This one is going to sting for a very long time for me personally. I know how bad these girls wanted to do this for Canada. If anyone has a chance to throw them out some support on Twitter or elsewhere, let them know.

If Canada won that game, Sinclair would have wrapped up both closing ceremonies flag bearer AND the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award/Lou Marsh Trophy. As it is, the loss leaves our gold medalist as the likely flag bearer, but hopefully Sinclair is remembered at the year end awards.

Some teams view rivals differently in all sports. The USA men`s hockey team likely views Canada has their biggest rival but Canada will always consider Russia as a much bigger rival.
Also, nobody cares who you would've cheered for had the Americans not benefited from a biased ref. We`re not going to change who we cheer for based on what the other teams fans would do. Chances are, most Americans would cheer for Japan had Canada won due to a ref.
The arrogance of Team USA is why I'm cheering for Japan.

Melissa Tancredi with maybe not a very good choose of words tonight at the moron referee:
"Put on your American jersey. That's who you played for tonight."

Grant WahlVerified @GrantWahl Canada forward Christine Sinclair: "The ref decided the result before the game started."
Can't blame them, really. You work your entire life for this. You stand on the verge of an historic upset, and the referee robs you of it.

Good on her.
I would have said the same thing in her position, with a few F-bombs added in there for good measure.

What a magical performance by Sinclair; one for the ages. I'll remember it the rest of my life, especially the death stare after scoring.
I'm so disappointed though. I was going to take a day off work to watch the gold medal game live if Canada made it through. There's no shame now, regardless what happens against France.
I thought Sinclair should have held the flag at the Opening and can't think of a reason why she shouldn't for the Closing.
Go Japan...
