Disagree. Top 10, but based on the last season.
Guy is so underrated even on this site it is insane.

Not necessarily disagreeing, but I think a lot of people question whether he's a 100+ point player, or a ppg player.
It's a tough look to pay a ppg player $10-11/year, but it's fine if he's a 1.4ppg.

He’s right around 10 for me, but a lot has to do with position. At least half of the top 10 are centres. Then 2-3 defencemen, plus a goalie or two. He’s for sure a top 4 wing IMO.

He's the straw that stirs the drink for the Flames. That's worth more than just his PPG. Without him I'm not sure this team makes the playoffs next season so how much is it worth to be a contender compared to an also ran? It's probably not going to be a great contract on the back half but it rarely ever is with players signing their last big deal as you either make the commitment to win or commit to mediocrity.

His position on the team makes a difference for sure. Of course you can overdo it (see Nurse).

Gaudreau is one of the best wingers in the NHL. Is Nurse even top 30 at his position? The Nurse extension was pure stupidity and you can't really use the Oilers as an example of what normal functioning NHL organizations typically do.

I wonder if the hold up on an announcement is because they want to have both Gaudreau and Tkachuk done for the press conference signing. A deal for Tkachuk could be what's holding any announcement up as I still think Gaudreau is probably done or damn close.

Might as well time the announcements for the Stampede Parade. City kicks off their big party by announcing their franchise cornerstones are locked up.
I know Johnny used to come out foe Stampede when he was younger.

I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to name that many players that you'd put ahead of him in a draft of current players. Is he top 5? Probably not. But he's certainly in the top 10 based on his output in 3 of the last 5 seasons and the fact he's churning ridiculous amounts of points at EVS.
I'm certainly worried as each week passes that this isn't going to get done. Really, if it's not done in the next 10 days or so, I would pretty much assume this will be a case of "I'm going to test the waters but keep you in my plans" situation that won't end well.

If I'm picking a team to win 1 game (ignoring contracts, etc.):
Crosby
Hedman
Makar
McDavid
MacKinnon
Vasilevskiy
Shesterkin
Josi
Barkov
Matthews
Zibanejad
Kopitar
Draisaitl
Kucherov
Point
ROR
Aho
Bergeron* (if healthy)
Malkin*
Stone *
Marchand*
That's 17-21 guys for me before Johnny enters the chat. But I'd still have to think long and hard about if he's the next winger I'd choose (Kaprizov/Ovechkin/P Kane/[Johnny]/Panarin/Rantanen/Huberdeau). But there might be a few other guys I'd have to plug my nose and think about like Alan Fox and maybe some goalies depending on the scenario.
Obviously I value C's who are strong in all areas. My biggest gripe with Johnny is that I don't think he's shown the ability to 'take over' a game in the playoffs like most (but not all) of the guys on this list - especially Kane/Stone/Kucherov as wingers.

maybe 10 years ago...Gaudreau outscored most of that list in the regular season and in the playoffs this year

Some of the names on here are hilarious.
Yeah, Zibenajad is better than Gaudreau for sure.

What do you expect a PPG UFA to make?

Kopitar had 67 points and 4 playoff points

I wonder if the holdup is because he hasn't signed yet?
I know that has caused delays in announcements before.

Good because I’m not. But if you want a more realistic example, there are plenty of teams who re-sign their better players at over market because they are their better players. Like Seguin, for example.

Wingers Last 4* seasons p/gp (gp): (*using 4 seasons should benefit Johnny as much as anyone)
Panarin 1.27 (265)
Marchand 1.24 (272)
P Kane 1.24 (285)
Marner 1.21 (268)
Huberdeau 1.21 (286)
Rantanen 1.18 (243)
Pastrnak 1.18 (265)
Gaudreau 1.11 (290)
Ovi 1.06 (271)
Kucherov 1.43 (197)
Kaprizov 1.17 (136)
Gaudreau deserves a lot of credit for his durability, but consistency is really important, too.
Kane and Panarin have more EVP (Marner has 1 less than Johnny).
A lot of way to slice and dice this list depending on what you prioritize (add Mark Stone if healthy).

How many of those 4 seasons has the Calgary Flames had an NHL-level head coach? Johnny's been floating in the wind for 3 of the last 4 seasons.
