- Burke called sutter about Phaneuf 3 days before the trade went down asking about Phaneuf, was told he was not available
- day or so later, Burke talking to Brian Murray who asked Burke if he was in on Phaneuf. Burke calls sutter asking wtf, sutter promises he was going to call him back about it
- they all knew something was up with Phaneuf in tge dressing room, but turns out it wasn't a beef with Iginla but other players on the flames
- sutter rejected original leafs offer which required aulie be included
- agreed to include aulie if leafs added a player (jamal frigin mayers)
- 'sutters cannot lie' deal was agreed on Saturday, but Sutter needed to get it cleared with management. But all players were playing that Saturday. Sutter promised he'd honour the deal even if all the leafs got injured that game. No one got hurt, deal went down
Kinda rough for Burke to dish the dirt on Dion like that when he's still in the league.

If anything it clears Phaneuf's name a bit. Having a beef with classy Iginla can't be a great PR spot to be in

Dion having beef with other Flames is widely speculated but that's not the same as common knowledge.

Like if someone in management said that Dougie Hamilton had beef with the locker room, even though everyone thinks that's probably true, I don't think that would be cool either.

Maybe that's just my own personal distaste for gossip...

Does it? If Sutter told Burke that Phaneuf didn't have beef with Iginla, it probably means the exact opposite LOL

Maybe... he explicitly came out and said that the known locker room issue was not with Iginla but rather other teammates.

In any case, i found it interesting. Gossip or not, i love hearing folks on the 'inside' share such insights. As fans, we are probably at least 2-3 layers away from what actually goes on. Getting a look behind the curtain always seems interesting

So Shanahan is going to be asking Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Gardiner, etc to take less money for the good of the team:

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Brendan Shanahan just clearly laid out the #leafs plan to ask players to make personal financial sacrifices in the name of the greater good. He says his old Detroit teams benefitted from doing just that.

Haha Ok, Shanny. All of those guys made lots of money before they signed in Detroit. Matthews, Nylander and Marner are looking for their big pay day.

Its the only way they can keep the band together...but we are already seeing how difficult that will be with Nylander.

Why would Matthews, for instance, take a dime less than Tavares?

Marner isn't going to take 3 or 4 million less than JT either.

Dubas has his hands full and will almost assuredly have to be making a very significant trade or 2 within the next 10 months.

Tough to do that when you pay the outsiders first.

That worked for Detroit because Yzerman took a fair deal, and everyone else was expected to fall in line after that. In the end it ended with Fedorov leaving but it worked because other UFA vets were willing to go there for cheaper to play with Yzerman and Bowman (helped that there was no salary cap at the time too).

Toronto can't expect much in the way of discounts from their "home grown" guys now because they went and gave a UFA in Tavares $11M. If you are a Leaf young guy you look and say "You gave Tavares $11M and Marleau $6.5M and you want me to take a discount now..."

Good luck to Shanahan with that.

The even better part is that Shanahan signed a contract with St.Louis when he felt that New Jersey wasn't offering enough coming off his ELC. Really I hope the young guys all follow their President's lead.

uh... what? Detroit's collection of big salaries were one of the reasons we needed a cap. The cap already forces stars to make less than they are worth.

Shanny was making between 6-7 million a year between 2000-2004 lockout

Nik Lidstrom was making 10

Sergei Fedorov made 28 million in a SINGLE SEASON in 1998. Yes, that's right, 28 Million in ONE YEAR.

Shanny is spewing bull#### faster than a water hose.

If I was any of those leafs players I wouldn't accept a dime less than market value.

If I were an NHL GM, the last thing I would do is comment in the media about an ongoing negotiation like that:

a. NHLPA just highlighted every Leafs player for frequent check-ins.
b. You've publicly admitted that the player is worth more than you're offering.

While I agree Shanahan is being dumb, it was different before the cap era.

Some players did sign in Detroit for relative discounts even after the cap era, but it was mostly because they already had a reputation for being team likely to win a championship. The Leafs have a ways to go still to deserve that reputation.

He himself signed an offer sheet coming off his own ELC - if i'm Nylander that would be my response to this whole thing.

"Ask Shanny why he signed an offer sheet back when he was RFA"

When a team has to resort to "but you get to play for the Leafs" as a tactic, you should be asking your agent to ask for maximums. Hometown discounts are only warranted if the player wants it rather than being guilted into it by team management.

That is some Oilers-level of idiocy right there.
